(More customer reviews)I bought these two volumes new and spent over $50 doing so. You get two DVDs with three discs in each. Why would I buy DVDs if I have the cookbooks? I find watching Ina Garten cook in her kitchen very relaxing after a hectic day. SHE is doing the cooking, not me. SHE is having to clean up, not me. Of course we all know she has a team to do all the prep work and clean up, but we can pretend, can't we? Lots of her earlier episodes with lots of food and friends. Lemon cakes, shrimp dishes, brownies, salads, entrees. I recently made her Szechuan Noodles and the first bowl cost me $40! That's 'cause I didn't have any of the ingredients you need to make it! But once you splurge on all the condiments, you're home free. I have eaten Szechuan Noodles all week! I can't get enough of her recipe. Hot, cold, warm. They are SO good! That recipe is on the DVD as well. She isn't cutesy like a lot of the Food Network people. I really dislike that. Cute doesn't work for me. I want someone with substance who knows what she's doing. Ina Garten is that gal. You can buy them new, like I did, or used. Just get them both! You will find yourself in your kitchen at odd hours of the night cooking something! They're addictive. Hope she comes out with Volumes 3, 4 and on.

In fact, the show has inspired me and my oldest daughter to begin creating cakes using fondant. My family and I highly recommend this show. However, this particular series really communicates Alton Brown's love for the journey in understanding food--how food is both an expression of culture and community, as well as a driving force in maintaining and creating culture and community.
Feasting on Asphalt is filled with a reverence for the every-day people that make this country the terrific, diverse, stock pot that it is. Watch this show, and you will want to get out there on the road, meet some of these people, eat a lot of food, and bask in the wonder of all the stories and communities that must be out there for you to discover. It will also make you think about the micro- and macro-cultures in which you were raised, and make you curious about how the foods and traditions of your family and community came to be.
In an increasingly homogenized world of large chains and Anywhere USA towns, Feasting on Asphalt shows us that hope is not lost. We are still here. We are still eating and cooking and living.

Boy Meets Grill with Bobby Flay - Blazin' Barbecue (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)This is an entertaining video to watch. He cooks some yummy things. True to Bobby Flay, there are always a MILLION ingredients and there's always multiple toppings and sauces for a dish. I'd like to taste some of his dishes cooked by him because I've yet to create one of his entire recipes that made sense as far as all the extra sauces and that I was completely happy with the way I cooked it. I'm no pro, but I do cook a lot, and I live in a green-conscious, gastronomic area. We aren't eating miracle whip and white bread around here. Anyway...this review is not so much about his choices in sauces and chutneys and extras that he adds but the fact that this video has 0 and I mean zero directions as to how much of the ingredient to add or any recipes anywhere on the DVD. I searched the entire thing looking for them and was shocked they weren't anywhere to be found. I made the fra divolo bbq T-bones and had to go to [...] to get the recipe. So, unless you are someone who can watch another person make something in a video and know exactly how much of what to add by watching them...you are going to have to go hunting for the recipes if you want to make any of them. Perhaps it is my own ignorance showing in this review, but I thought the point of having a cooking video is to help the cook make the dishes themselves. I wouldn't think it was for the entertainment factor itself.

As for content, it is typical Alton Brown. He is funny, informative, and not bad on the eyes - even if his fashion sense leaves something to be desired. Oh and the recipes are great, too!
The 3 discs are Morning Munchables (great collection of breakfast goodies); Flat Out Tasty (Beef Paillard, Chicken Kiev, Turkey Piccata, 3 recipes for Flounder, Chicken Fried Steak, Country Style Steak, and Swiss Steak); and Tasty Toppings (2 Mayonnaise recipes, Strip Steak with Pepper Cream Sauce, Hollandaise, Beurre Blanc, Compound Butter, and Honey Butter).

(More customer reviews)I have been anxious about learning how to cook faster because of my busy schedule. I heard a lot about Rachel's tapes and bought 3 or 4. After reviewing them I really didn't learn anything new. The meals weren't that interesting but it was nice to finally see what her show was about. Maybe if I tuned in more I would get something productive from the tapes/show. I won't buy another cooking video but I will keep looking for a book to meet my needs. So overall I guess it was okay... nothing to jump for joy about.
SIDEBAR: The Fasta Pasta Microwave Container was GREAT!! It became our life saver. Now that item is worth singing about. Include it with your quick microwave cooking arsenal and you are set. GREAT INVENTION.
