(More customer reviews)When I was 14 I travelled Rt 66 with my parents. As young as I was it felt very special to me and I never forgot it. I saw this video on the History Channel and when it came available for purchase, I bought it.
Actually, I bought it as a gift for my husband because he's travelled it also and we both felt a connection to that road. We have friends in Flagstaff, AZ and they live just minutes from 66 that still runs through town -- always a pleasure to be there. We love this DVD because it gives history, pictures, and memories of a great time.

However, this particular series really communicates Alton Brown's love for the journey in understanding food--how food is both an expression of culture and community, as well as a driving force in maintaining and creating culture and community.
Feasting on Asphalt is filled with a reverence for the every-day people that make this country the terrific, diverse, stock pot that it is. Watch this show, and you will want to get out there on the road, meet some of these people, eat a lot of food, and bask in the wonder of all the stories and communities that must be out there for you to discover. It will also make you think about the micro- and macro-cultures in which you were raised, and make you curious about how the foods and traditions of your family and community came to be.
In an increasingly homogenized world of large chains and Anywhere USA towns, Feasting on Asphalt shows us that hope is not lost. We are still here. We are still eating and cooking and living.

(More customer reviews)This is a great road series based on roadside eateries and diners. Alton combines history, comedy, and eating, reminding me of road tris I've been on. You can find a better price than $79 though. I bought mine at Target for $30.

History -- Modern Marvels Brewing Review

(More customer reviews)"Brewing" provides a somewhat interesting, though largely repetitive, history of brewing with an emphasis on the U.S.
The Budweiser brewery in St. Louis produces 16 million barrels of beer/year. Barley is soaked in warm water until it begins to germinate, then it is roasted. Etc., etc., until after aging in a storage tank for 21 days its poured into cans, bottles, and kegs.
The earliest evidence of brewing dates back 3,500 years in what now is Iran. Beer became a form of liquid bread, a means of storing grain after harvesting. Eventually brewing spread to Europe where it was also appreciated for being cleaner than water. "Brewing" also identifies a German brewery that has been functioning since 1040, dating back to when the site was also a monastery.
Viewers then receive an overview of the fine points of differences in various beers - lagers, ales, pilsners, etc., as well as the introduction in the U.S. of refrigeration, ice cars, pasteurization, bottles and caps.
In 1880 there were 2,300 breweries in the U.S. Prohibition brought this down to 160. However, after microbreweries (1970s) and home brewers began, we now have 1,400.
"Brewing" ends with coverage of Sam Adams new Utopias 25% alcohol beer - 2X the alcohol level of wine.
