(More customer reviews)As a slasher film, this is solid but nothing special. However, taken in terms of its overall quality, it is very good. I really like this movie, for two reasons.
First of all, it offers valid and insightful social commentary on the utter foolishness of these Sweet Sixteen parties and the warped values they espouse. You get the whole package, not only the spoiled, obnoxious girl, but also, more importantly, the doting father. I say he is more important, because it is clearly the parents who create the problem. Decent people do not spend tens of thousands of dollars on birthday parties. Period.
Let's face it, once you get past a certain point, it is not about enjoying a party. Once you spend thousands of dollars, it is purely about displaying the fact that you have lots of disposable income. This is about as tacky as it gets(especially in THIS economy).
Of course, I don't have anything against rich people. Some people are always going to have more than others. That's just how the world works. But it's the vulgar display, just for the sake of the display, that is in such poor taste. The act of putting on a show, just for the sake of reminding your neighbors how much more you have than they do. This film offers great perspective on this phenomenon.
But this film is really carried by its heroine. She is the proverbial 'outcast' girl...........although she is hotter than the girls who are supposed to be so much more popular. I have to confess, I forget her name, but she anchors this movie. She is incredible. She is gorgeous, but in a way that really suits a horror film. She is raven-haired, and very dark, which lends her an aura of mystery. (Edgar Allen Poe used to write about women with really long, black, beautiful hair, which is why I guess I tend to associate this look with the world of horror.)
Either way, she has a depth about her, and a strength, so she is more than just another pretty face. She exudes the kind of integrity and individuality that you have to have to make this type of character believeable. She is very authentic as a decent, likeable girl. But she has enough of an edge, enough of a sense of power, that you are not really all that surprised at how she handles herself in the film's climactic moments.
This is just a tv movie, so certain elements do not hold up to what slasher fans might expect in terms of gore or graphic violence. But the heroine is one of the absolute best. You can go back 10 years, to the Scream films, or even all the way back to the early 80's, with Halloween, Friday the 13th, Prom Night, etc. You won't find many lead females in any of those classics who are any better or stronger than this girl.
And, perhaps best of all, the TRUE evil in this film is fully acknowledged..........and then dealt some very brutal justice.I highly recommend this movie.
