The Sweeney - Series One - 4-DVD Box Set Review

The Sweeney - Series One - 4-DVD Box Set

If you don't know your Mockney slang (Cockney rhyming slang), you might have some difficulty following one of the grittiest cop shows on either side of the Atlantic. Long before NYPD Blue was catching the attention of our FCC censors, The Sweeney (Scotland Yard's Flying Squad of plain clothes detectives) was thrust upon UK viewers in the mid 70's, with some harsh language, occasional topless girls, and the over the top, violent antics of the fiercest cops in England.
John Thaw, as Detective Inspector Jack Regan, perfectly fills what is possibly his best known role, apart from Inspector Morse. Dennis Waterman, as Regan's partner, Sergeant George Carter, is equally talented in fisticuffs, which would come in handy in Waterman's next series, Minder, where he played bodyguard for hire, Terry McCann.
Regan often twisted the rules of the law to apprehend his criminals, usually convincing the apprehensive Carter to help. Regan was often in trouble with his superiors, and was under constant scrutiny from internal affairs. The show lasted 4 seasons, and ended with Regan actually getting ... well, I won't give it away!
Apart from the double disc set of the 2 late 70's Sweeney big screen films, which has been available on Amazon for years now, the 4 seasons of this hugely popular British show have not been available in the US until now! It's about time!

We'll Meet Again - 4-DVD Set Review

We'll Meet Again - 4-DVD Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Compelling war drama about a USA Air Base in England. Struggling B-17 crews find solace among British ladies. The Yank's money is appreciated but not always their ways with alcohol and women. This is a story of the small village of Market Wetherby and it's war-weary locals, and how they cope with the new arrivals, American bomber soldiers who freshly join the war, and expect to win overnight.
The British TV has always been excellent in period television series, war dramatizations, and this is no exception. War nostalgia. It is surpurb, with added interest of half a cast of Americans joining British actors. Brits have the preserved buildings to pull off a period series. They use that to advantage. Beautiful 1943 scenery, costumes, props. This show was actually filmed in the 80s but because of the historical setting, it is a timeless DVD set; classic. Perfect for those with war interest, awesome for those interested in what it was like living in a country waiting to be invaded by Hitler's army. It is something of a cousin series to the more recent homeland war drama of "Foyles War" (a must for all British Drama fans) and "Enemy at the Door" (also good).
WE'LL MEET AGAIN cleverly mixes in actual bomber air strip and bombing raid footage. But much of the action takes place in the village homes and the local pub. Dr. Helen Dereham (by Susannah York) and Maj. Jim Kiley (Michael Shannon) are only two that show the extraordinary work that war leaders had to complete, as well as the struggles romantically of working so closely in life/death living. There's is not the only romance. Plenty of hardship and lives lost. Very believable, although I'm too young to know first-hand, being a Baby Boomer.
The series ends well; but with a potential for another season, which, alas, never came. This set has no subtitles or CC. It's box warning of partial nudity refers to one breast exposed for 3 seconds.
My wife and I both enjoyed this, both sorry there were no additional episodes after the 13 provided in this set.
Episode details (each about 53 min.):
1 ALL DAY AND EVERY DAY-Market Wetherby, Suffolk, April 1943. American Air Force arrives in England ungraciously.
2 HANDS ACROSS THE SEA-Cocky American crews fail to perform well in the air & on the local ground.
3 THE MILK RUN-Letty's Uncle Sid arrives with contraband booze while she falls for a Yank on a 'milk run'-safe mission.
4 ONE STEP FORWARD,TWO STEPS BACK-Some romance buds but overall relations remain tense.
5 THE BIG ONE-Market Wetherby & the American Base find some agreeable relationships. 'The Big One' mission heads over Germany.
6 UP THE SMOKE-Some Yanks get London R&R while Dr. Dereham ponders her feelings between her injured husband & US Maj Kylie.
7 FIGHTING MEN-2 men in English woman's lives seems to become a minor epidemic, plus secrets are found out.
8 A WING AND A PRAYER-Yank marries a local just prior to a dangerous raid.
9 YOU'LL NEVER KNOW-2 Brit wives contemplate continued relations with Yanks. 3 sec. of female nudity.
10 OLD ENOUGH TO FIGHT-Maj Kiley halts his romantic relationship causing poor results at work.
11 ONE DAY AT A TIME-Maj Kiley gets more active in the air & personally as death touches others lives.
12 EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES-Dr. Dereham adds more bedside time to her manner dealing with Maj Kiley's injuries.
13 THE END OF THE BEGINNING-It's love & war and time to choose permanent sides on romance issues.

Return of the Saint - Complete Series - 7-DVD Box Set Review

Return of the Saint - Complete Series - 7-DVD Box Set

I remember when this used to come on "CBS late night" on Fridays paired with the New Avengers. Kind of a resurgence of 60s british TV in the late 70s. I really loved both shows for the refreshing story arcs and the music as well. The first few notes of the Theme song just kind of gets in your head and stays there. In some ways it has a similar feel to the Avengers, though also a lot like The Equalizer and that type of genre as well.
Can't wait to get this on DVD in NTSC, hopefully will be released soon. Though I am tempted to buy this one since I do have a region free player somewhere. Would be best if they released it in a bluray, then it would defintiely be worth the $70+ buckaroos.
I never saw the original The Saint series (with Roger Moore) until after I had seen this series, so to ME this WAS the original! I also preferred it in color. Tried to watch the old series since Roger Moore was a familiar face, but just never could get into the older series.
It was a great comeback, wish it had lasted longer.

Agatha Christie: Miss Marple - They Do It With Mirrors (2006) Review

Agatha Christie: Miss Marple - They Do It With Mirrors (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Miss Marple in this story goes down to the bottom of the sinister pit of ugly greed. A father is using his own son to cover up his own crime and the son is accepting to do that in order to finally get out of his bastard status and be recognized as a legitimate son. And the end is even more pitiful than this plan would sound to normal minds. This film is directed in such a way that the setting, which is sinister in many ways, appears so at least one hundred times more than it actually is. A certain Agatha Christie had apparently read some of her classics like "Women in Love" and the death of two lovers at the end of the book. She also had managed to integrated "Romeo and Juliet" in her tale. But what is essential is the fact that a rich heiress is trying to use the money she got from her husband in a fund to help young criminals be rehabilitated but she does not see the greed that surrounds her in all possible ways and makes her attempt at being a good lady in a harsh society so vain and definitely dangerous for her own health. Too naïve she is and endangering her own life by bringing around her the people who have multiple reasons to get rid of her.
Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

Understanding DNA DVD Review

Understanding DNA DVD
Average Reviews:

I purchased this DVD to help my son learn about DNA for his science project. While it was pricey, I really wanted him to learn about DNA and this looked like it fit the bill. While the DVD was very educational and well done, I was aghast that it was only 13 minutes! I kept looking for another chapter on the menu - but no, it is 13 minutes for $59.95!!! I should have read the product details more closely. I liked the DVD, but the price is exorbitant!

Wallander: Episodes 1-3 (2005) Review

Wallander: Episodes 1-3 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The wonderful, Basset Hound-faced Krister Henriksson, a great Swedish actor, is simply irresistible and irreplaceable as Inspector Kurt Wallander. Thus far by my count there are 26 episodes in which Henriksson has played Wallander, from 2005 to date. (I just saw his latest last night, but I can't recall the title.)
Created by author Henning Mankell (NO, this is not an alias for Diane Fossum!), Wallander is the epitomy of common day-to-day homicidal inspection in Sweden. Mankell has said the story is the vital thing--he uses events in Sweden for inspiration--the cops come in second place to the story.
Wallander as a character seems to be a raging controversy because Kenneth Brannagh deigned to play Wallander in an all-English-speaking series. The big fans of that series are rather pissed off about the original Swedish versions. WHY?
As for Britain/Brannagh, let me see if I can explain carefully, when it comes to foreign offerings:
Whenever someone comes along to do an English remake of something non-English, it automatically loses its cultural and ethnic contexts. Wallander is set in Sweden, with Swedes and their stories, showing the function of the Swedish police (in this case, the city of Ystad).
I don't think most people pay attention to how silly it looks for this world to be suddenly "translated" into English. When Americans or Brits do a remake, they usually "Anglicize" the story first, unless doing something historical. Yet the British version of Wallander is still "Swedish", set in modern Sweden, TRIES to take from Mankell's original stories, and for all those reasons, it fails.
And though I am a big fan of Brannagh, he is no Henriksson. So, if they had made, say, an ENGLISH Wallander set in London or Bristol or Coventry, I'd go for it, I'd love it because it would be based on the Swedish Wallander, pay due homage, and show us the equivalent information set in modern England. That would have been well worth the investment.
Anyway, pay no mind to the shouting about the English remake. Henriksson is barely matched by Brannagh's silly, semi-confused portrayal. Here you will get all the good Swedish atmosphere (and GENUINE), the laid-back Swedish acting that is nonetheless so satisfying...and a good, sane approach to police forensics in Sweden. It seems we have such a hard time understanding policework in Europe, and I am especially taken by the weird attitudes I see in Sweden, Norway, Finland and France.
Wallander is a treat for me because I knew so many cops like him. He has his demons and pains, but he has a smart, calm and tricky demeanor as a homicide inspector. He lives, he enjoys his opera, coffee and aged whiskey, he loves his daughter Linda, who is also a cop. Though his theories are mostly put out there so he himself may discredit them, it beautifully shows him thinking aloud. No Poirot or Holmes magic tricks here...just meat-n-potatoes inspecting, the kind I know from my own life.
I'd say not to waste money on Brannagh. Get the real thing, and savor it, the way Swedes linger over coffee and snow--but learn to read subtitles at light speed, unless you know Swedish.
By the way, this set consists of episodes 1-3, with the next available set consisting of episodes 4-6. Stick to only these two sets. As far as I know, out of the 26 episodes, this is all you're going to get here. All the rest are in PAL region 2 format, available only for Britain apparently.
Oh, well, I thought they had Brannagh! In the U.S. we like the genuine stuff, and the real thing: Henriksson. As to buying, I won't budge on this until all 26-to-date episodes are availbale as a set HERE.

Irene Huss: Episodes 4-6 (1998) Review

Irene Huss: Episodes 4-6 (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a big fan of the Irene Huss series -- it is excellent on a number of levels. The acting is subtle and superb; the plots are inventive, and it's general theme offers a twist to the usual "capable-woman-in-a-'man's' world." Irene Huss is unlike any other cinematic or literary woman detective I know of -- while not perfect, she's pretty well grounded and balances work, family, and personal time with great aplomb. Series II is a bit different from the original season. It offers more of an in-depth character analysis of Irene and greater insights into other major characters. However, to my mind, these benefits come at the cost of the action's tempo. Still, they're interesting and illuminating insights and offer a depth that Season 1 did not possess for me. I recommend it highly.
