Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Complete Seasons 1 and 2 Review

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends: Complete Seasons 1 and 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever had an imaginary friend or not, this hilarious and hysterical cartoon from the Cartoon Network is both entertaining and funny. There are some hidden jokes that the younger kids won't get and adults will not be able to not laugh at. The reference to 80's British band Frankie Goes To Hollywood was classic and quick witted and funny all at the same time. Some jokes fly by so fast that you don't get them until watching them over and over again and then you just laugh harder because you missed it the first time; at least it is in my case. I am a fan of cartoons like this and wish that there were many more shown like this. The characters themselves are all total and complete individuals of people that we all know or have known. There's a bully, a hero, his sidekick, a rich snob, an ecentric older person, a rebellious teen, and many more that you can identify with. The episodes are all funny and I have yet to see an episode that I didn't enjoy and or laugh out loud at. I love the character Cheese just because he's so darn annoying and loveable at the same time; he reminds me of young kids that want every last bit of your attention as you're trying to accomplish somethhing that's meaningful and important to you and here comes the little destructive and loud annoyance to remind you that they're there too and you need to provide them some attention...RIGHT NOW or suffer their wrath of a tantrum or just getting into trouble. Fosters is a show for the whole family. Sit down, watch it with the kids, and enjoy the laughter that follows.

Scooby-Doo's A Nutcracker Scoob (1996)
Average Reviews:

"Nutcracker Scoob" is about a three stars since it has the whole gang. It is a good one with Scrappy and the ghost is believeable. Younger children would enjoy the plot, but everyone else will think it is a bore. The second episode "Alaskan King Coward" has no plot and is a one star. It only involves Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy and it is only like 10 minutes long.

Critter Quest Review

Critter Quest
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ohhh, these are some awesome videos for nature loving kids! Our test group absolutely went wild for these and insisted on watching them repeatedly. Luckily for us parents, these don't carry the annoyance factor that typical cartoons bring, so repeat viewings are a-okay. These are the ultimate resource for any kid who loves learning about bugs, birds, squirrels, caterpillars and more!
Peter Schriemer is the perfect host for this series. He is engaging, appears to take a genuine interest in the subjects at hand and his enthusiasm is downright contagious. He takes us on a "backyard safari" to demonstrate how one's very own backyard can become the most fascinating place of all for exploration. The camera work is also excellent, with up close, clear footage of all the featured animals.
This disc contains three episodes, each tackling different subject areas. Creepy Crawlers Everywhere features all types of insects and small animals: beetles, slugs, walking sticks, pill bugs, frogs and jumping spiders. There's even a neat little lesson on how to build your own beetle trap, using common household materials. Season of Change gives us the lowdown on how different animals prepare for winter. For the coldest season, we learn how these guys must put their survival skills to work by foraging (squirrels and chipmunks), hibernating (frogs and turtles) and migrating (birds). And finally, The Wild Side of D.C., shows exactly which critters call Washington, D.C. their home - from Canada geese to ducks and squirrels, the animals run this town.
Smithsonian Networks is renowned for quality programming, and it's no surprise that Smithsonian Networks Kids offers equally great content. These programs are informative, down to earth (literally!) and utterly fascinating. Bug out on this backyard safari and your kids will be begging to give their own yards a closer look to make their own creepy, crawly friends.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Animated) (1979) Review

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Animated) (1979)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're in your thirties, yes, this is the version you watched on TV as a child. I was so excited to find this on DVD, and it is as wonderful as I remembered it. I'm excited that my own children can now share in this magical adventure. This version is true to the text of the novel. Watching it as a parent, I enjoyed the bits of subtle humor added to some of the characters to keep the movie from being overly dark and disturbing for children. Over the years, I have occasionally tried to find this version. Once I checked out a version from the library that was so boring I couldn't even sit through it. Thank you, Amazon, for offering this wonderful classic!

Imagine finding a secret passageway to a faraway land...a world full of mystery and enchantment. That fantasy becomes a thrilling adventure in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the first tale of C.S. Lewis' acclaimed children's books, The Chronicles of Narnia. When four children pass through a special wardrobe closet, they discover the kingdom of Narnia, a land of talking animals and mythical creatures. But an evil witch's spell has cast Narnia into eternal winter. Fearing that an ancient prophecy has come true, and that the children are Narnia's chosen rulers, the witch tricks the youngest brother into betraying his family. Now, only Aslan, noble lion and King of the Woods, can help them defeat the witch , restore springtime to Narnia, and claim their rightful places on the throne.

Franklin - Back To School With Franklin (2003) Review

Franklin - Back To School With Franklin (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Those that have missed their favorite animated turtle would do well to check out this brand-new story. The plot may sound generic at first, but the story itself is extremely well-written and even makes some nice references to past "Franklin" stories. Everything that's likeable about the series is here and there are a couple of neat surprises as well. There's only one musical number, but it's a catchy one and well worth listening to. The story will easily hold viewers' attention and there's also a supblot that's just as enjoyable as the main story. Some of the characters have different voices, but such an excellent job of casting was done that these differences are barely noticeable, if at all.
For even more fun, check out the DVD special features. Nice bonuses include a read-along of an entire "Franklin" story by author Paulette Bourgeois, descriptions of several of the characters with narration and a trivia game. There are also several games available for those who have a DVD-ROM drive.

Blue's Clues - Classic Clues (1996) Review

Blue's Clues - Classic Clues (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Classic Clues" is truly classic in that the episodes on it are never-before-seen episodes featuring Steve, the classic host of the show before his "brother," Joe, took over in the fifth season. Most of the other favorite characters are around too, all as delighful as always.
Viewers who were turned off by the seemingly rushed format of the school activities depicted in "Blue Takes You to School" will delight in Blue's pretend school in "Blue's School." Even though the episode is the same length as any other episode, everything just seems a lot less rushed and more with a sense of fun. "Something to Do Blue" features a fairly decent song that previously could only be heard on one of the "Blue's Clues" albums. It also teaches neat ways for beating boredom by encouraging imagination.
Steve is in fine form in both of these "lost" episodes featured on this video. Twice he's seen with a guitar, although that doesn't work out quite as he would probably like! His interactions with Pawprint are as fun as ever and he's even up to his old, classic, sock puppet mischief.
The only thing that I should post a caution about is that the video, like other such videos, contains about ten minutes of promos at the very beginning for pretty much every current Nick Jr. show and related DVDs and videos. So unless that actually holds you or your kids' interest, I would recommend fast-forwarding at the start by about that amount and remembering to rewind only back to the point.
All-in-all, this is an important video (or DVD, should you choose that option) that shouldn't be missed by fans of the show, especially since these episodes will probably never be aired on television.

The Halloween Tree (1994) Review

The Halloween Tree (1994)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First let me warn you, this is a little too spooky for kids 7 and under. But it won both an Emmy Award, and an award from the Film Advisory Board. The film is based on a story by Ray Bradbury, and he narrates the movie. The movie is very different than the book, but than what movie isn't? The scary "Moundshroud" character keeps you guessing as to whether his intents are good or evil. He is wonderfully voiced by Leonard Nimoy, and if you have never heard him voice animated films, not only is he really good but you can't tell it is him!
In the story 4 kids,(3 boys and 1 girl) are preparing for Halloween night and find that their buddy Pippin is being taken away in an ambulance. No one seems to know whats wrong with him, and the kids seem lost without him as he is the one they all look up to. A mysterious character shows up by the name of Moundshroud, who tells them that his spirit has been taken by ghosts of Halloween past and they must come with him to capture Pippins spirit and return it to its body. But can they trust him, as it seems he has his own secret motive for capturing Pippin. Each of the kids is dressed as a classic Haloween character Moundshroud takes them across the world and through time itself to discover the origin of that classic Halloween costume character. For example the hunt for the mummys origin leads them to ancient Egypt and its dark secrets. The skeleton takes them to old Mexico for "Day of the Dead" celebrations. The Witch takes them back to the bards of England. They also learn what real friendship truly means, and must freely give a huge personal sacrifice if they want to save the soul of their friend.
This movie is bigger in story than it seems, and my wife has watched this tape about 6 times. The animation is good, very fluid, good character design. The movie will keep you guessing until the end. Suspenseful, imaginative, and educational without looking like it is trying to be.
UPDATE 2010: I wrote this review in 2003, and I cannot believe this movie is still not on DVD. It is for rare gems like this that so many of us have kept our VCR players. We still watch this at least once a year. Hang onto your VHS copy, who knows how long we will have to wait.

Blue's Clues - Telling Time With Blue (1996) Review

Blue's Clues - Telling Time With Blue (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought that my five-year old son had outgrown the fine library of Blue's Clues videos when I saw this one. Mistakenly, I purchased it to help him learn to tell time as he was interested and ready to learn. This video is fine for helping children develop the concept of activity-related time throughout the day, but not what I was expecting or in the market for. Blue's Clues helps to develop so many skills that are often ignored in early educational efforts including excellent critical thinking and conceptual skills. However, it is important to purchase the video for the correct audience. This title was misleading to me, although the video would be valuable for a younger child who has yet to master the concept of time throughout the day. (I have rated this video according to it's intended audience - for the purpose of teaching 'telling time' it simply isn't helpful.)

My daughter loves this show, so we bought this DVD when the show disappeared from our stations. The DVD is great for kids who love the show, but I'm disappointed they couldn't offer more episodes on it. The same titled Australian version DVD has more than double the episodes this US version has! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that more DVDs become available in the US before we tire of watching these same limited episodes over and over!

The Powerpuff Girls - The Mane Event (1998) Review

The Powerpuff Girls - The Mane Event (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The third Powerpuff Girls DVD to be released so far, "The Mane Event" is far and away the best of the three. The first two volumes, "Down N' Diry" and "Powerpuff Bluff", had little in the way of special extras aside from trivia games and DVD-ROM options. "The Mane Event", on the other hand, is a treasure trove of special features. The disc includes only 6 cartoons culled from the show itself (the other DVDs had 10), but it makes up for it by including two cartoons that have never been seen before on television, "Helter Shelter" and "Power Lunch". These two cartoons arent the best PPG cartoons ever made, but they alone are worth the purchase. The biggest bonus of the DVD is the addition of Craig McCraken's first student film with the girls, "Whoop@@#$$ Stew", which not only can be watched with or without McCraken's audio commentary, but the use of the angle button on the DVD remote switches the cartoon from full color to pencil test. Audio commentary can also be heard on two other cartoons on the disc. The Mayor babbles through "Something's a Ms." while Mojo Jojo tears apart "Slumbering With the Enemy". These commentaries are not meant to be informative, just very fun. Other features include the Powerpuff music video "I'm a Super Girl", bios on some of the characters, interactive DVD-ROM games, and a trailer for previously released PPG and Dexter videos. The only thing that this DVD lacks that the VHS tapes with the same material has are the bonus "Cartoon! Cartoon!" shorts, which are no big loss. I think everone has seen "Dexter's Lab: A Story" enough times on Cartoon Network. All in all, "The Mane Event" is 133 minutes of Powerpuff fun you will not want to miss.

Baby Looney Tunes, Vol. 3 - Puddly Olympics Review

Baby Looney Tunes, Vol. 3 - Puddly Olympics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few weeks ago, I gambled on renting "Baby Looney Tunes: Puddle Olympics," at a local video store in hopes that my little boy would find something besides "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," that would draw his attention for a little while. As it turned out, I was so pleasantly surprised that I bought this product less than a week later.
On this DVD, the cast members at Granny's Daycare are: Granny (voiced by June Foray herself) and the toddler versions of Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, Tweety, Tazz, and Lola Bunny. Occasionally, they are joined by pint-sized Melissa (Daffy's love interest from 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel') and Petunia Pig. There are eight episodes with four 60-second sing-a-long music videos for a running time of almost 90 minutes.
Four of the episodes are: 1. 'Time & Time Again,' as Daffy learns the value of knowing how to tell time; 2. 'May the Best Taz Win,' as the gang learns why playing is more important than winning; 3. 'Sylvester the Pester' has our favorite feline craving Granny's attention without let-up until Tazz does the same thing to him; and 4. 'Mine!' (our least favorite) has Daffy finding Granny's lost wallet and refusing to give it back.
The next four are: 5. 'Cat-Taz Trophy,' as Sylvester and Tazz learn to share when competing in a toy car derby; 6. 'Duck! Monster! Duck' has Daffy finding out what it is like to be scared; 7. 'Brave Little Tweety' has timid little Tweety finding his own courage; and the title episode is the best, 8. 'Puddle Olympics' shows the tykes turning their imagination into a competitive game to cross a puddle (it looks like a lake to them) to reach the playground on the other side.
Now, frankly, I confess that I wouldn't have been caught dead watching a show like this before I was a parent, but now that I am, I have learned a new perspective. Accordingly, I want to address a few common points made by other reviewers about this program's available DVDs: one, that this show is a travesty on the classic Looney Tunes characters; and two, that the characters' inconsistent behavior tends to veer back and forth between infants and four or five-year olds. I am certainly inclined to agree with those observations, but I think it misses the most vital point: we, as adults, are not this show's intended audience; little kids are.
As a comparison, yes, "Baby Looney Tunes" is in the same genre as "A Pup Named Scooby Doo," and "Little Flintstones," where the original audience (who are now adults) will likely find these new versions vastly inferior to their classic predecessors. However, these new 'kiddy-ified' programs were produced as a way of reinventing classic cartoon characters for a different and much younger generation. Further, "Baby Looney Tunes" has a distinct advantage over similiar kiddy makeovers, where this show actually blending cute, gentle humor with a simple, little life lesson into the story giving the program at least some educational value.
Much like current morning fare on the Disney Channel, such as "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," I believe "Puddle Olympics" strives to make the featured stories important by making basic concepts, like telling time or sharing toys, attractive to infants and toddlers. It surely isn't always easy to balance fun with learning, but give this program credit for at least trying. Is "Baby Looney Tunes" in the same league as the current bigger-budget Disney Channel programs? Maybe, maybe not, but it does offer its intended audience (not to mention, parents) more than just a mindless diversion.
With that in mind, speaking as a parent, I would highly recommend "Puddle Olympics," as a low-cost, albeit valuable investment for your little ones, particularly as an alternative to your child's favorite show that you just need a break from. Like me, you may be surprised that this charming DVD is much better than you would have reasonably expected.
