I got started knitting with the original Art of Knitting DVD in 2004. It started my love affair with knitting, which still continues. When I saw a second DVD was released, I scooped it up.
The advanced knitting segments have given me the tools and confidence to go beyond scarves. I have even started the sock lessons with Nancie Wiseman and can't believe how easy it is!
I was so afraid to work with dpn's (double pointed needles), but Nancie is a great teacher and takes you step by step through the process. But there's more....a whole set of crochet demos that are fantastic! I have always wanted to learn to crochet to make cute flowers as pins or decorations and now I can. As in the first DVD, the other segments are entertaining and informative, including the story about recycled yarn from saris, felting workshop and great resources and tips.

I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting Review

prevents frustration.
While having a book or two on crocheting is certainly helpful, a newbie like myself found this DVD to be the most valuable in terms of actually learning basic stitches. The close-ups of Melissa's hands make it easy to see exactly what she is doing. Once you get the basics down, the written directions in books are much easier to understand. I started with the DVD, practiced my stitches and then went with a pattern in one of my books.
If you cannot afford a DVD, check out YouTube. There are a couple of crochet veterans who have made their own homemade tutorials. :o)

The Art Of Knitting (Leisure Arts #107454) Review

I am an expert knitter/designer and I also teach. I really expected very little from this DVD. I got this DVD because I am most comfortable knitting "continental" style, and I HOPED to: 1) get a refresher on American style, 2) pick up some alternative beginner techniques, and 3) find alternative/clearer language to improve my teaching.
I found all this and MORE. This is a marvelous teaching tool that I would highly recommend to any begginning knitter, and I will recommend it to anyone taking a knitting class to augment the hands on teaching with additional info.
If hands on teaching is not available, this should do it... going alongside a teacher and a novice knitter - it's a great set up. For me, the begginning steps got a bit tedious, but I expected that - I would expect it to be very comforting to someone who is new to it, and just the right pace for a begginner.
My only tiny qualm with this video (if you watch ALL the sections) is a focus in two segments on Buddism. I expect this from the author of THE ZEN OF KNITTING, but it was repeated in a knitting circle segment that was heavily religious. This CAN be informative as to how a knitting group can become an affinity group for people of a religion, but... it's off-putting in a begginning knitter class.
DO watch the extra features, the ones on the making and dying of yarns are so informative, and the artist who talks about color theory has wonderful things to think about that will influence the way you combine color and think about your knitting.
Simply fantastic. GET IT, and Get knitting!
