Queer as Folk (2000) Review

Queer as Folk (2000)
Average Reviews:

QUEER AS FOLK is still one of the most amazing TV Shows ever and is a landmark as the show for the new millennium. This New Queer As Folk Season 4 DVD Box Set has all 14 episodes of the fourth season which still happens to be one of the most controversial and bravest series on television today. The BOX SET includes Bonus features such as: Behind-the-scenes with Peter Paige's directorial debut; Sneak peek at Michelle Clunie and Gale harold's latest movie; Behind the Babylon tour; Wardrobe closet; Photo gallery; Biographies; plus Previews and promotions. I have seen all 14 episodes of Season 4 and it is another great and very emotional season. Like before I am a little upset that this season is very short (like season 3) when compared to season 1 and 2. Either way season 4 is still a good season. I am still amazed at how honest this show is on dealing with gay life. Queer As Folk ia about the life of a group of gay guys and a lesbian couple living in Pittsburgh. Queer As Folk makes no apologies and thats what is so great about this series. From the graphic sex scenes to the drama of dealing with the prejudice that still haunts America, this show is so brave and I give Showtime a big thumbs up for having the balls to take on such a big risk as Queer As Folk. This show has some issues that are far more real for some than others. This is not a show just for gay people, but for ALL people. It deals with human emotion and thats something that we can all relate to whether we be straight, gay, bisexual, black, white, brown or in between. With season 5 rumored to be the final season I encourage you all to enjoy this great show because very few shows can touch your heart yet push the limit as far as this show has. I encourage anyone who has a open mind and a open heart to BUY this amazing DVD collection as it will inspire you and if nothing else open your mind to a lifestyle not as uncommon as you may think. Watch more than one episode before you judge this amazing series. I would just like to say Queer As Folk Season 1 and 2 and 3 are also great to own. I will be in line when they release Season 4 of Queer As Folk on DVD in April 2005

Ronin Warriors - The Call (Vol. 1) (1995) Review

Ronin Warriors - The Call (Vol. 1) (1995)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first encounter with anime was in 1997 (for me, kindergarten) the first anime I ever saw was this one and it has remained very dear to me over the years. Unlike other animes I saw long ago, I was not dissapointed when I re-watched it. Some may find the English dub a little annoying (Rowen's voice drives me nuts), but it adds a bit to the humor for me. This is a very unique DVD as it is double sided. It's abit of a hindernce if you suddenly want to switch from Japanese to English or vise-versa, but you get used to it. The dialougue for the English version is kind of stereotyped. Cye with his British accent, Rowen with his New York, and Kento with his sufer. But all around the voice acting is okay for something done so long ago. I suggest you watch it in both languages first and then make a desicion on which you like better.
Basically this is a story of an evil dynasty trying to take over the world; run by a floating head. Though most likely not meant to be comical I always thought it was funny. He basically traps all the people in Japan except for one Mia Koji and a littel boy named Yuli. Enter the Ronin Warriors. Mystical armors/warriors of legend come to save the world from impending doom. At first they get their butts totally kicked, but as the story continues they get stronger and more confident.
The animation is really beautiful in some parts (particularly the armors) but can be repeatitive and some times even disproportionate! All around though, this is one of the best animes I've seen. I strongly recommend getting it for anyone who is an anime fan!

Johnny Test: Johnny X and Super Pooch Review

Johnny Test: Johnny X and Super Pooch

Very funny stuff! I must admit that the "super hero" Jonny and Dukey isn't, in my opinion, them at their best...but it's still very good! Jonny Test is one of those rare cartoons that can be entertaining to both kids and adults. It can be a bit crude at times, but once you get past that, it's hilarious! Of course, Dukey is the most intelligent, SANE, member of the family, and his comments on the others are often right-on. I recommend Jonny Test most heartily!

Yu Yu Hakusho - Spirit Detective - Yusuke Lost, Yusuke Found (Vol. 1) (2002) Review

Yu Yu Hakusho - Spirit Detective - Yusuke Lost, Yusuke Found (Vol. 1) (2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After watching a few episodes on Cartoon Network's run of Yu Yu Hakusho, I decided to pick up the first DVD volume and give it a shot. And for the most part, I'm very pleased with this purchase! And if you are wondering, this disc is uncut, and contains both an English and Japanese audio track. Yu Yu Hakusho (YYH) hasn't really presented itself as being a ground breaking so far, but what it does offer is some good characters in a variety of fun situations. As with most series, the first few episodes introduce us to the characters and let us get to know the world they inhabit.
Of course, when the lead character dies in the first episode, you know something's up! I won't go into the details of the story, but a synopsis is due. Yusuke is somewhat of an outcast who doesn't really display a care for anything. The only thing he seems good at is beating up on other middle school gangs. But one day, he saves a kid from being hit by a car, only to have himself hit instead! Now, our anti-hero lead is stuck between Heaven and Hell as a ghost since the higher beings don't know what to make of him. He is then offered a chance to return back to life, which is all well and good, except that Yusuke doesn't really care to go back. That is until he realizes how many people truly cared for him. And so the tale unfolds.
YYH showcases a good mixing of several different genres; everything from fighting, supernatural and even some good old-fashion romance. YYH also borrows some aspects heavily from Dragonball Z. I personally do not care much for DBZ (though I do thoroughly enjoy the earlier part of Dragonball), but I found myself warming up a bit more to this series.
I found myself liking the character designs as they remind me of older series from the 80s. A good break from the styles being pushed out these days. The animation is fair, but since this is such a long running series, that can only be expected. The palette of colors used is also pretty minimal and kind of drab. But ultimately I'm in for the show, and not the eye candy.
As for the localization, I'd say it's pretty good. I enjoy English dub tracks, so I didn't have a lot trouble adapting to this one. Some of the characters, such as Yusuke, are well portrayed while others come off as too cartoony sounding (Kuwabara). I should note that the actual recording job of the dub could of been handled a little more professionally. Some of the dialog gets clipped slightly when things get loud, and there were also a few instances of microphone *puff* sounds. FUNimation went the extra mile and dubbed the opening and closing songs, which is always a plus in my book. And fear not, the original songs are present on the Japanese audio side.
The adapted dub script follows the original Japanese dialog fairly well, with only minimal changes here and there. Thankfully, FUNimation included subtitles for both the English and the Japanese tracks (Most studios skimp out on subtitling the English track). But unfortunately, they aren't the best subs out there as they are white instead of the normal yellow. Alas, they are functional and well timed. Missing is a subtitle track devoted to translations of the onscreen Japanese writing, which is a real shame.
This disc features decent audio and video; it's not terrible, but nothing to write home about. Depending on your equipment, you may or may not notice some of the macroblocking "squishy". The disc also features some good extras. For starters you get a clean (textless) opening and ending sequence in both English and Japanese. The profiles do a good job of fleshing out a few characters without being riddled with spoilers. Although, they are annoyingly tilted at a 30 degree angle, making them difficult to read. Yama's Notebook is a welcome section that explains some of the Japanese meanings for names as well as translations for some of the kanji used in the show. There are a few trailers for Dragonball related material, and one for Blue Gender.
So would I recommend this disc? Probably, but make sure you know what your getting into first. While the DVDs are cheaper than most anime DVDs, you're also getting less content. The discs will be released with 4 episodes for the first few discs, then most likely drop down to 3. With a series this long (over 100 episodes in total) that's going to require quite a commitment on your part. Another problem with the length of the series is that there will no doubt be long drawn out stretches of lulls in the later episodes; something that turned me off with Dragonball Z. These first few episodes were good, but there's no telling where it'll be by episode 50.
But hey, try out the first few volumes and form your own opinion. What you think is far more important than any jaded reviewer :)

The Brini Maxwell Show Review

The Brini Maxwell Show
Average Reviews:

Brini Maxwell, that cross between Martha Stewart, 'Tippi' Hedren and an ideal 50's-60's wife/mom, delights and entertains in this wonderful series. Yes, of course she's really a man (the clever Ben Sander), but that doesn't stop her from charming all sorts of folks all over the Big Apple, including, at one point, a cadre of macho firefighters. Even if you find a few of her ideas for decorating or entertaining a bit, well, too-too, her can-do attitude and her admirable sang-froid - or is it a martini-induced stupor? - will have you savoring every moment in her presence. Plus, she's got a retro wardrobe that'll either have you chortling out loud, or drooling in envy (and you know who you are)!

Popeye:alibaba & His 40 Thieves Review

Popeye:alibaba and His 40 Thieves

It sounds like either the other reviewer needs to check the color settings on his TV or his copy is a dud. My copy looks and plays just fine. There is only one downfall to this DVD, though: If you have copies of the Popeye DVDs from Goodtimes, I wouldn't give this DVD of Popeye too much thought, for a third of the cartoons are from VHS copies of them. Here are the cartoons from Goodtimes that are on here:

A Haul In One
Cookin' With Gags
Insect to Injury
Gopher Spinach
Shuteye Popeye

The other Popeye and Van Beuren cartoons have not been touched (no new sound effects). The audio on the title cartoon drags, so if you want a good copy of "Popeye Meets Ali Baba's Forty Theives", I suggest trying to find the blue and green-labeled two-hour Popeye DVD from Genius Products (has drawing of Popeye's head on the front); the copy on there is a well-restored, original Paramount Pictures copy (no A.A.P card in sight).
Overall, this DVD of Popeye is not too bad. But what can you expect for a DVD that is only $1?! I have a small collection of Cartoon Craze DVDs that are of excellent quality; half of the cartoons don't even look like they came from VHS copies. Other than the Goodtimes copies of Popeye, I suggest getting this cheap disc and keeping it until you can find better.

Cartoon Crazys: And the Envelope Please...

You'd think companies would leave well enough alone... but NO, they have to go and try to improve things that DON'T need improving or CAN'T improved.
Frankly, the collection of cartoons on this DVD is excellent, but I can't recommend the disk. While the visual quality ranges from fair to very good, the audio is atrocious. Instead of simply cleaning up the old mono tracks for the toons, the company that released this DVD went ahead and "remastered" the soundtracks to the cartoons ==> ERGO, witness sound effects that NEVER existed in the original toons and horribly imbalanced soundtracks!
Save your money...
Hopefully, someone WILL release better versions of these toons in the near future.

Bugs Bunny Halloween Hijinks (Clam) Review

Bugs Bunny Halloween Hijinks (Clam)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have long looked for a compilation of Loony Tune halloween cartoons. I recall from my childhood wonderful run-ins between Bugs Bunny and witches, abonable snowmen, and vampire-like creatures. Who can forget the episode when Daffy Duck was caught in a Mad Scientist's lab and was being chased a Dr. Jekyle/Mr. Hyde type. The ones I recall being my favorite were the ones with Porky Pig that had spooky themes. Where am I going with this? Just to say these wonderful episodes are NOT on this video. They simply take excerpts from some of those cartoon, link them together with some newer, poorer animation, and give you a very unsatisfactory sampling of what is out there. Someone please call Warner Brothers and plead with them to put out a good set of their spooky Loony Tune cartoons and to file this one away in file 13! I strongly recomend NOT buying this one.

Pokemon - The Johto Journeys - Squirtle Squad (Vol. 49) (1998) Review

Pokemon - The Johto Journeys - Squirtle Squad (Vol. 49) (1998)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though Nintendo Power will no longer sell the Pokemon comics any more, I'm going to love this volume just like you told me. They contain the following:
"Hour of the Houndour". In this episode, I don't know what it's all about, but I noticed that the Houndour will want to rescue Pikachu from Team Rocket, because they're the midnight heroes, not the midnight villains.
"The Totodile Duel". In this episode, Ash and the gang encounter Totodile, the Water-type funny since he's the funniest of the 3 starter Pokémon you get to choose at the start, by throwing the Lure Ball at Totodile. When they do, Ash and Misty can't get their fair share, so they must battle one-on-one to see who gets to keep the Totodile.
And finally, "Hot Matches!". In this action-packed episode, Ash encounters Skarmory, who is not only a Metal-type, but also a Flying-type Pokémon. However, there's only one drawback. Why did Skarmory use Steel Wing against Cyndaquil, even though Cyndaquil is a Fire-type, and won the battle in one blast? You'll just have to find out.
Now, thank you all once again on your cooperation on what to rank, and good luck to all you Pokemon trainers out there. For volumes 13 and 14 (which is the final volume of the Johto Journeys), I'll see you in Spring Break 2002. Hang in there everybody! You're almost there to the end of the series!

Awesome Bible Adventures: Jesus' Amazing Miracles & David's Mighty Battle Review

Awesome Bible Adventures: Jesus' Amazing Miracles and David's Mighty Battle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We thought these were AWESOME.
What they are is a sweet group of kids, who are in their home in the beginning of the video, and then a character building situation comes up (normal real life scenario's) and the older sister in the group guides the younger ones by telling them how it reminds her of a story from the bible.
Then we are taken back in the day of that story, and we watch the story play out. It is a full set, full cast, fully acted out like you were right there in the part of the story (ie: Samson, Tower of Babel, Noah, Joshua). The stories are well done, and it isn't corny. The kids, even our younger ones, were interested in watching. Some scenes might be pretty realistic for kids of a young age, but even then, maybe not. Ours watched the Samson one, and Delilah was dressed a little unmodest but not too inappropriately where we didn't wanted it to be seen, yet effectively so our daughter noticed and said "see mommy, she doesn't love or honor God, Samson shouldn't have gone with her".
After the story plays out, we are back in the room with the kids from the beginning, and they all participate in drawing correlations to their own life and highlighting the important moral/character lessons from the Bible Story. Praise the Lord .. we loved these and we are starting to collect them all.
They are biblically sound and the children in the videos are so precious and the lessons are wonderful. We didn't find anything distasteful or inappropriate and we were so pleasantly surprised. We really just go them to take a shot in the dark and try some unknown Christ-Centered video to see if we could find something fun for our video library - WHAT A HIT!
Hope that helps :)

Tom & Jerry's Night Before Christmas Review

Tom and Jerry's Night Before Christmas
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This video contains 4 classic cartoons from the thirties and forties: The Captain's Christmas (1938), One Ham's Family (1943), Toyland Broadcast (1935), and The Night Before Christmas (1941). Only the last one is a Tom & Jerry cartoon, but all are wonderful cartoons that kids and grownups alike will enjoy watching over and over again. In The Captain's Christmas, a pirate with evil intentions dresses up as Santa, but he and his cohorts catch the Christmas spirit and end up "giving the Captain and the Kids a Christmas Eve celebration that brings down the house - on their heads!" One Ham's Family is a very funny Tex Avery classic in which the big bad wolf pretends he's Santa to invade the home of little Junior Pig and his parents on Christmas Eve. But the wolf is no match for little Junior, "the nastiest 'problem child' ever to be left 'home alone'!" In Toyland Broadcast, a toy shop becomes a radio station. It is a "musical special with an all-star toy cast featuring tributes to such famous performers as Kate Smith, Paul Whiteman, and Bing Crosby." The piece de resistance is Tom & Jerry's Night before Christmas, a hilarious holiday chase with a touching, happy ending.

MGM Cartoon Magic - Featuring Barney Bear and King Size Canary (Volume 1) (1944) Review

MGM Cartoon Magic - Featuring Barney Bear and King Size Canary (Volume 1) (1944)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll be honest... I bought this tape in order to get to the Tex Avery episodes!
This tape has 3 Tex Avery toons; "Screwball Squirrel", "Little Rural Riding Hood", & "King Size Canary". These toons are pure gold!
The remaining flicks... "Unwelcome Guest" (a Barney Bear toon), "The Lonesome Stranger" (a sort of downtrodden Lone Ranger), "The Captain's Christmas", and "The Blue Danube" (an MGM FANTASIA-type short) are something I endured to get to Tex's work. To be fair, I am NOT a Barney Bear fan, and I was not familiar with the Captain character. The Lone Ranger parody was kind of fun, but I have seen too many of the Daffy Duck send ups recently to fully enjoy this one. The animated rendition of The Blue Danube was very well done considering the budget these guys were working in... technically impressive for the time period.
I offer one more word of advice on this subject... not all of these toons will appear on Cartoon Network due to the presentation of the subject matter. I have seen many Warner Bros cartoons edited for modern viewing audiences (read censored), so it is a joy to collect a copy as unedited as possible to appreciate the original form of the film.
For an actual recap of the individual episodes, I would heartily endorse checking the Internet Movie Database for your own benefit.
