Dragon Ball - The Saga of Goku - Boxed Set (1997) Review

Dragon Ball - The Saga of Goku - Boxed Set (1997)

First of all, let me say this: If you're planning on getting this set to see the version of the first 13 episodes that aired Cartoon Network, you're sorely mistaken. These episodes were dubbed in 1995, and are fairly different from the newer incarnation. Not only are they heavily censored, but they are dub-only, and the discs are poorly encoded to boot. Funimation can't release an uncut version of the of these particular episodes, because KidMark still holds the rights to them. However, since the 1995 dub only went to episode 13, the remaining 140 episodes of Dragon Ball can be found uncut in the other "_____ saga" DVD sets.
First and foremost in the differences between the new and old dubs: the music. Although the redub from Funimation uses the original Japanese score and English arrangements of the original themes, this uses its own score. The theme's kinda catchy, and reminds me a bit of the ending theme to Mystical Adventure (movie 3), but the music in general reeks of a generic "American cartoon" quality that doesn't fit the series too well. It's mainly this that gives it a feel quite apart from the new version.
Then there's the voices. Some of them will seem familiar to you if you've seen the first two dub seasons of DBZ, or live in part of the world that shows the International DBZ dub instead of Funimation's. In general, they're pretty good, but hard to get used to after all these years of hearing Funimation's voice actors in these roles. The pronunciation that this dub used for "Kamehame-ha" gets pretty annoying, too.
The scripts are fairly accurate outside of the censorship (which there's a lot of), but there are also the classic jokes-that-fall-flat typical of anime dubs aimed at children. Also worthy of note is that many of the lines from this dub carry over into at least the edited version of the new one, though there are some changes in the redub to bring it in line with the rest of FUNimation's releases.
Censorship in this set is, for the most part, roughly equal to that of the version showed on Cartoon Network. It's in different areas, though. Cut-wise, a little more of the video is left in, but it's made-up for in some completely ridiculous use of digital paint and bad script rewrites. There's even some extra footage thrown in the first few episodes, and added recaps in most of them (since true previous-episode recaps didn't really start until about episode 22 or so).
One example of the goofy censorship in this version: Goku catches a fish in the first episode. In the re-dub seen on Cartoon Network, Goku is naked, though much of the scene is cut. In this version, all of the scene is left in, but Goku is wearing very poorly-drawn digital underpants. One major digital censor that carries over into the newer edited version is the use of American dollars on the fishing pole in episode 5 to catch Oolong (instead of Bulma's panties); you may notice that, when the episode airs on Cartoon Network, Goku dives into the water nude, but is suddenly wearing underpants when he surfaces, due to the re-use of some (but not all) of the older dub's footage for that one scene.
The feature "Curse of the Blood Rubies," though touted as a "pilot" for the series, is actually a dub of DB movie 1, "Shenron no Densetsu" ("The Legend of Shenlong"), with some footage from episode 2 thrown in. I'm not quite sure why this was done, though it was probably either to replace a very perverted scene or just balance out the amount of cuts from the film... probably both.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend getting this if you like Dragon Ball for its off-color and oft-perverted humor; the newer "saga" DVD sets will suit you fine. The jury is still out as to when these 13 episodes will appear uncut on DVD, but even so, only get this set if you're really itching to see what Funimation intended all of the Dragon Ball franchise to be like when they first set out to dub the series: a mere shadow of its original self, aimed squarely at kids far too young to appreciate Akira Toriyama's quirky sense of humor.

Dragon Ball Z - World Tournament - Draw (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z - World Tournament - Draw (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, the Junior Division is over and the adults draw numbers to see what order they will face each other in the tournament. 7 Z fighters are left in the final 16(Krillin, Gohan as Great Saiyaman, Goku, Vegeta, Videl, 18, and Piccolo) as well as the two evil Majins Supopo Bitchi and Yam(english names may vary). Also entered are Kibit and the God Kaioshin(name most likely changed) so they can seek out Baba-Di. Rounding out the fighters are Killer, Jewel, some big Genie Guy and the masked fighter named Mighty Mask has actually been replaced by Trunks and Goten. And let's not forget the last contestant who will face Android 18 in the first round, Mr. Satan. And did I mention that Goku and Vegeta drew 11 and 12 and face off in the first round?? Great set up although at times you may find yourself begging for the fight to start already out of sheer excitement...or maybe boredom you decide!

DragonBall Z: Kid Buu Saga (1996) Review

DragonBall Z: Kid Buu Saga (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Kid Buu Saga wraps up the Dragon Ball Z series, but leaves enough of an opening that will eventually be filled in with GT.
What happens here is that Goku and Vegeta have escaped from Super Buu after releasing Fat Buu from within. They pull out the Z Warriors trapped within and watch as Buu regreces back into his origional form. In it's first act Buu blows up planet earth, with Goku and Vegeta bairly escaping taking with them Mr. Satan and Dendee. They arrive on the Kai Planet, now grief stricken that they were unable to save Gohan and the others. They lure Kid Buu back to the Kai Planet for the final showdown where the two battle, but not in fusion. By utilizing the Namekian Dragon Balls, as well as Mr. Satans fame they finally put an end the threat of Majin Buu, but not before one final wish is made.
Overall this wraps up the Dragon Ball Z series as well as the Majin Buu Saga. The battles are intense and it is truely a close call. However the series goes out with a bang, and leaves an opening for a future series (GT).

Dragon Ball Z: Season Nine (Majin Buu Saga) Review

Dragon Ball Z: Season Nine (Majin Buu Saga)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This long awaited ninth boxed set will finish up Dragon Ball Z on DVD. It's been just over two years since I excitedly bought the season one set and I have anxiously awaited this ninth one, but at the same time it's weird to feel like this series is ending for me all over again. Nevertheless these episodes are action packed and a fitting ending for one of the most loved anime of all times. This set contains the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas in these final 38 uncut episodes:
254 The Evil of Men_____________ 255 Buu Against Buu
256 Empty Planet_______________ 257 Time Struggle
258 Super Moves of Gotenks_____ 259 Trapped in Forever
260 Feeding Frenzy_____________ 261 Gotenks is Awesome
262 Unlucky Break______________ 263 A Whole New Gohan
264 Search for Survivors_________ 265 Majin Buu Transforms
266 The Old Kai's Weapon________ 267 Ready to Fuse?
268 Union of Rivals______________ 269 Meet Vegito
270 Rip in the Universe___________ 271 Vegito...Downsized
272 The Incredible Fighting Candy__ 273 The Innards of Buu
274 Mind Trap__________________ 275 Visions of Deadly
276 Evil Kid Buu_________________ 277 End of Earth
278 True Saiyans Fight Alone______ 279 Battle for the Universe Begins
280 Vegeta's Respect____________ 281 Minute of Desperation
282 Old Buu Emerges____________ 283 Earth Reborn
284 Call to Action_______________ 285 People of Earth Unite
286 Spirit Bomb Triumphant_______ 287 Celebrations with Majin Buu
288 He's Always Late____________ 289 Grandaughter Pan
290 Buu's Reincarnation__________ 291 Goku's Next Journey
These episodes are all for the most part entertaining and a lot of them are fan favorites. The stakes really get raised as everyone on the planet is put in immediate jeopardy soon after followed by the possible destruction of the planet earth itself. The final Kid Buu episodes are great and find the entire existence of life in the universe being threatened ratcheting everything up to it's highest possible levels. The final episodes should be truly pleasing for fans to rewatch or experience for their first time.
I've said before that I appreciate how these sets were made with an overall theme across the nine that line up well and look good together on a shelf. A well made booklet comes in each of these sets containing brief character bios and episode descriptions. The video is always well restored and in excellent condition, presented as Widescreen 16:9 Aspect Ratio. The audio is great with three different options:
American English Voice Track with American Music
American Voice Track with the Original Japanese Music
Original Japanese Voice Track with the Original Japanese Music.
The only extras on these sets have been trailer's for other Funimation productions and textless opening theme and ending credits.
These episodes are not just the final saga to the Dragon Ball Z series but also to the Dragon Ball series that began it all. The storylines here aren't just full of the science fiction and hard hitting fights Dragon Ball Z was known for but also the elements of magic, fantasy and off beat humor that Dragon Ball was known for. Looking at these episodes now, they are the perfect ending to such an entertaining series that artfully managed to constantly escalate things through a seemingly natural course of events. After these episodes it seems hard to imagine more epic storylines for these particular character's than what we're given here.
This final set is full with equal amounts of the fighting fans expect as well as the elements of humor and fantasy that make this series so loved, fusing the two perfectly. Akira Toriyama ended his long running story fittingly and satisfactorily for fans with these sagas all ending with a final nod towards the Goku we were introduced to way back at the start of Dragon Ball, a Goku that looks at everything as a challenge and adventure.
I can't wait until this set is released in May, thanks for your time.

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - Dead Zone (1996) Review

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - Dead Zone (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As said in the title, I think this is a great DVD. If watching, i advise you to put the settings on Japanese with english subtitles. The dub voices and acting is horrible. Now, here is the review. The first of the 13 DBZ movies, Deadzone (Return My Gohan in japanese) Tells of Garlic Jr., and his struggle to take over the world. He starts by collecting the dragonballs to summon the dragon Shenron. He ends up kidnapping Son Gohan, the son of Chichi and Son Goku- The worlds strongest fighter, and Goku goes on a bit of a journey on his flying cloud kintoun to rescue him. After Garlic Jr gathers the dragonballs (right after a very interesting sequence where Gohan gets drunk off some apples) he wishes or immortality. To know the rest BUY THE DVD. Oh, and the extras are great for those sheltered from the japanese episodes (me ;_;). There are four clips that weren't shown on Dub Dragonball Z. 2 are from pisode one and two are most of episode 9 (only about 12% of episode nine was shown on Dub DBZ). But, just to sum everything up, buy the DVD. You shouldn't regret it but only in minor ways. I gave it a four because they could have done better with the subtitles. Kinda hard to read.

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - The World's Strongest (1991) Review

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - The World's Strongest (1991)
Average Reviews:

I purchased DBZ The World's Strongest, since i am a die hard DBZ fan i found it very entertaining. As with many anime series it gives the viewer no idea whatsoever of where the characters came from, who they are , or what their doing. So if you know nothing of DBZ you will find it very confusing. Thanks to the Dragon Balls and his dedicated assistant Dr. Kochinthe evil Dr. Wheelo has been freed from his icy tomb. Now these mad scientists plot to take over the world with their fearsome biotechnology... There's just one hitch. Dr. Wheelo's body died, and now his brain is living in a humungous glass jar! Dr. Wheelo seeks the strongest, healthiest body in the world to be the new home for his magnificent brain, so Dr. Kochin and their bio-engineered warriors kidnap Piccolo, Master Roshi and Bulma trying to find the world's strongest fighter. Goku, Gohan and Krillin come to their friends' rescue, but Dr. Wheelo's henchmen are amazingly strong! To make matters worse, it seems that Dr. Whello not only wants to have Goku's body, but he already controls Piccolo! The action is great especially when Goku goes into the room with the spinning spike balls, however i found the tenacity of ChiChi, Goku's wife when it comes to Gohan to be too much. Her domineering attitude and posessiveness of Gohan really gets annoying after a while. If your just gettunbg started with Dbz stick to the episodes first then go onto the movies.

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - Tree of Might (1997) Review

Dragon Ball Z - The Movie - Tree of Might (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For someone who hasn't been into the whole DragonBall thing for too long, I consider this movie pretty great. Since this was a DVD, I had my first chance to see it uncut and in Japanese, which was worth spending the extra $$ just to see it subtitled and raw (and not to mention it includes some Japanese DBZ songs) ~~King Kia's Japanese voice surprised me since i have been watching the watered-down Cartoon Network version for soo long. The movie had a good plot to the story but not much fighting... ~*BUT the (little) profanity and HuMoRoUs nudity make up for it*~ If you want action i wouldn't really recomend getting this, but if you want a somewhat-comedy, this would better suit you or if you're just a so called *newbie* (kinda like me) it would also be a great item to add to your soon-to-grow DB collection.
