(More customer reviews)_Blue's Clues_ is a thinking parent's answer to _Barney & Friends_. Concepts are taught in a way which, while age-appropriate, forces your kids to actively participate rather than be passively led.
The format is that Steve, an older-brother figure, inhabits a cartoon-like land in which some mystery needs to be solved. That mystery puts Steve, you, and his dog Blue on a hunt for clues. When the clues are assembled, Steve then asks you and Blue to help him figure out how they're linked.
The episodes here teach both surprisingly difficult (artistic perspective) and oddly simplistic (sound matching) lessons. But the combination of Steve's engaging presence, the eye-catching sets, and the cohesive messages all conspire to make this tape a valuable learning tool.
I only have two reservations about recommending both this tape and the entire series.
First, I think the recommended viewing age is a little optomistic when it rates it as appropriate for 2-10-year-olds. Don't believe that anyone much over 6 will regularly enjoy _Blue's Clues_. It's pretty slow-paced stuff for viewers who already know the conclusions the episodes will draw--and most first graders already do.
Second, there's no new material here. If you have Nickelodeon and a VCR, there's nothing here you can't record. Still, the tapes are so cheap that if the contents of this particular one interest you, it may be worth the few bucks to save you the bother of waiting for these episodes to air again.
