Licence To Grill - Volume 1 Review

Licence To Grill - Volume 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Licence To Grill is our favorite! Robbie Rainford not only has great gourmet grilling recipes, but he has fun presenting them. He has a very happy and pleasant manner that makes him easy to watch. His outdoor kitchen and pool are beautiful. The music is cool and catchy and we end up humming it all day. Everything about the show is great, why can't other cooking shows be as entertaining? We watch it as much for entertainment as for grilling recipes. His recipes are more complex than basic grilling - they are really gourmet! Everything of his we have made has been excellent. He is a little nervous in the first episode or 2, but afterwards he loosens up and his personality comes thru. We were very happy to find this DVD after our cable company changed their lineup and we lost his show. Now we NEED Volume 2... and 3 and 4! "Its time to grill... Action!"

Naruto, Vol. 1 - Enter Naruto (2005) Review

Naruto, Vol. 1 - Enter Naruto (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, you've probably read by now many of the hate-filled reviews by many die-hard Naruto fans who have loved the show long before it came to Cartoon Network's Toonami a while ago. I'm one of those die-hard fans. But, I'm here to try and give an unbiased review.
First of all let me say that yes, I am with those many that hate what has been done with the Naruto series here in America. I hate Naruto's every-other-sentence, "believe it", I hate Shino's voice actor, I hate the editing, yada-yada-yada I hate a lot about it you get the point and you've heard all of that before. But let me say, that for those who do not have access to the subbed version(particularly now that it is licensed and therefore some people would be deterred because that's illegal) they might find this quite an enjoyable show.
Naruto, at it's core, is good. That point is arguable only by osmeone who has underanalyzed Naruto. Naruto takes the long showcased subject of Japanese shinobi(or ninja) and turned it into something quite original. There are over thirty characters in the show, each with their own UNIQUE skills, personalities, and flaws. Take Rock Lee for example, definitely one of my favorite characters because he is incapable of using magic or illusions in battle, and therefore has relied completely on hand-to-hand combat. But since he has been extremely determined to prove him self on equal standing with the other ninja, he has become quite powerful.
Sasuke is the show's heart-throb, always one-upping Naruto and, though he's on his team, manages to be his friend and rival all at the same time. Up until far later in the episodes(where they start filling in a time skip in the manga with "fillers") the show is consistent and the plot keeps rolling along with new elements and twists, character developments, and pretty important to me, their strength. It isn't a DBZ-like approach where every time they beat an enemy a new stronger one comes, then they get stronger. It is a more realistic approach, witht he main characters and their allies under the shadow of their teachers and their most powerful allies whom they can't even hope to go against at their current levels, training to try and become close to a match.
This series has creativity, originality, great action, great story, great character development, and that all makes it a very good show. However, the flaws in the English dubbing are quite apparent. I've heard many many dubbings in my day, and I really must say that this one is quite bad(I can't say it's the worse when I still remember One Piece). The voices of the original anime help to define the character, they do a good job of suiting each character's personality, but I don't think that's the case here on the English version. It's quite apparent that these voices do not suit the characters, and that the show suffers from the changes made to it.
When all is said and done, I must say that it still manages to be a pretty good show, especially for those who are not so used to the English subtitles. The original Naruto series gets a 5/5, and the English, a 3/5. I suggest, like others here, you check out the original. It's almost a different show. Trust me, you'll thank me.
Dattebayo.

Arizona Dream (Sueño De Arizona) Review

Arizona Dream (Sueño De Arizona)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two favourite movies and one of them is "Arizona Dream". I can watch it endlessly and very often. You know sometimes you got the mood when you just want to sit and watch something old, something you've seen many times, something very dear and familiar. "Arizona Dream" works for me at those occasions. Actually I don't like Emir Kusturica and his other works. Paradox, but I adore "Arizona Dream". It's the movie which seem to absorb all the wisdom of the world and at the same time all its contradictory. In a few words I can tell about the plot that the film is about our dreams. That we all pursue them and doing that we don't notice people around who also have their dreams. And very often our desires obstruct other men's desires. And we can never be happy. I know, maybe it sounds silly but it's not.
I can't say what happened to Kusturica in this feature but all 140 minutes of the film are flying very fast and you wish it was endless. Johnny Depp is very different, Vincent Gallo is ingenious as always (just watch his "North by Northwest" remake scene), Jerry Lewis is hilarious, Faye Dunaway and Lili Taylor make a perfect duo.
"Arizona Dream" is a kind of a movie every time you watch it you find something new, you discover new hidden meanings and layers. You won't get bored with it for sure. If you don't believe me - check imdb ratings. They are quite good and I'm sure none of those who voted loves this film as I do. If there was an ultimate movie for me to recommend for everyone - it'd be "Arizona Dream" without any doubt. I understand it's not a commercial project but still it's a shame such a brilliant picture is still not out on region 1 DVD.

Queer as Folk - The Complete Second Season (Showtime) (2000) Review

Queer as Folk - The Complete Second Season (Showtime) (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
QUEER AS FOLK is still one of the most amazing TV Shows ever and is a landmark as the show for the new millennium. This New Queer As Folk Season 2 DVD Box Set has all 20 episodes of the second season of one of the most controversial and bravest series on television today. The BOX SET includes Bonus features such as: behind the scenes outtakes, deleted scenes, special edition episodes, a Photo Gallery, DVD rom extras, and much more. Queer As Folk shows the life of a group of gay guys and a lesbian couple living in Pittsburgh. I feel the first season of QUEER AS FOLK is better, but this second season is very good as well and shows the growth of the characters. I have seen all 20 episodes of Season 2 and it is slower paced than the first season, and I sometimes find myself looking at my watch which rarely ever happened with season 1. I am still amazed at how honest this show is on dealing with gay life. Queer As Folk makes no apologies and thats what is so great about this series. From the graphic sex scenes to the drama of dealing with the prejudice that still haunts America, this show is so brave and I give Showtime a big thumbs up for having the balls to take on such a big risk as Queer As Folk. This show is as close as it gets to real life. This is not a show just for gay people, but for ALL people. It deals with human emotion and thats something we can all relate to whether we be straight, gay, bisexual, black, white, brown or in between. I have since signed up for Showtime just for this show. I encourage anyone who has a open mind and a open heart to BUY this amazing DVD collection as it will inspire you and if nothing else open your mind to a lifestyle not as uncommon as you may think. Watch more than one episode before you judge this amazing series. I will be in line when they release Season 2 of Queer As Folk on DVD.

Blue's Clues - Blue's Jobs (1996) Review

Blue's Clues - Blue's Jobs (1996)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Blue's Jobs" is a 10th anniversary DVD release. While, like other "Blue's Clues" DVDs, it doesn't contain any special features (other than promos), it does contain four great episodes from the show. For those who don't like "Blue's Room" --- take heart, all of the episodes on this DVD are from before "Blue's Room" segments were added to the show. This DVD also has no episodes with talking-and-singing clues. And for those who don't like Joe (I personally do), two of the episodes feature Steve.
The episodes on the DVD are:
"Occupations"
This a Steve episode. In this episode, Steve pretends to be a news reporter, while and the viewers play Blue's Clues to figure out what occupation Blue wants to pretend to be. An absolute classic. That's the news, now everyone knows.
"Blue Goes to the Doctor"
Blue's checkup at the doctor was recently ranked one of the show's ten biggest moments on Nick Jr. Now you can see it for yourself. Some viewers were very pleased that this episode broke a stereotype by featuring a female doctor. This is a Joe episode.
"Mechanics"
In this episode, the viewers and the characters get to pretend to be mechanics. A nice Steve episode.
"Playing Store"
In this episode, the characters have all set up various stores. The characters and viewers learn about buying and selling in this Joe episode. All episodes generally seem to fit the theme very nicely. The promos on the DVD include a look at the upcoming Backyardigans release, "Mission to Mars."

One Piece, Vol. 2 - The Circus Comes To Town (2004) Review

One Piece, Vol. 2 - The Circus Comes To Town (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
4kids is universally known throughout anime fandom for butchering all animes that they license.
As in my review of the 1st edited dvd of One Piece where I explained the incredibly lame 4kids edits, you will find the same inexplicable and stupid edits to the show as on the 1st DVD, such as edited out blood (from Zoro's fights) and edited out guns.
--------------------
Examples:
1) In the 4kids version, a gun that fires a piece of cork was pointed at Shanks' head.
In the original japanese version, it was a REAL gun with REAL bullets pointed at Shanks' head. The person with the gun had EVERY intention of KILLING Shanks.
2) Zoro's major fight in this arc has all of the blood removed from it, again, by 4kids.
In the original, he bleeds a lot after being stabbed IN THE BACK by the main bad guy of this arc.
------------------
Cuts like these should make you question if what 4kids is showing you on Cartoon Network is the real story. Certain characters on this DVD are ALOT more ruthless in the original version, i.e. Buggy. You won't see that in this version. They are also quite willing to KILL if necessary in the original series. Again, you won't see that on the edited DVD.
In other words, One Piece is not a show for 7 year olds. This version is deliberately hiding the real story from you, and this should not be tolerated by anime fans.
And it's only going to get worse...
In future 4kids DVDs of One Piece, entire story arcs will be significantly SHORTENED or SKIPPED altogether. In fact, as of right now, the One Piece dub is at episode 64, which is approximately episode NINETY-FIVE of the original series. (As of Friday, April 21, 2006, Japan is currently at episode 262.) This alone should tell you that something is seriously wrong.
I am only giving fair warning to ALL Cartoon Network and 4kids TV watchers of One Piece. You are being seriously ripped off by 4kids Entertainment.
To make a long story short, this is not One Piece. If you know anyone who has the original One Piece anime in their possession, go to that person and watch it immediately. You won't be disappointed.
In other words, do not buy this severely edited DVD under any circumstances!
Otherwise, 4kids Entertainment will continue to assume that you are stupid and will continue to create such abominations that are excuses for dubs, such as this One Piece dub.
If you want to see the real story, pester 4kids to release uncut DVDs of One Piece. When you see the original story, you will wonder why you ever even thought of considering purchasing this or other edited 4kids One Piece DVDs...

Last Tango in Paris (1973) Review

Last Tango in Paris (1973)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Marlon Brando's recent death affected me deeply. He has always been one of my favorite actors and I truly admire him for his extraordinary talent. During the last few weeks I have rented many of Brando's films and am still amazed, after all these years, at the force of his acting in "Last Tango In Paris." I believe that some of his best work was done in this film.
Paul, (Brando), an aging American expatriate in Paris, comes home to discover that his marriage has ended. His French wife, Rosa, had slit her veins, leaving bloody bath water and spattered walls behind. She didn't leave much else - no good-bye note or explanation for her husband, parents or lover, a guest in the fleabag hotel she owned and managed. She did bequeath the hotel, and it's seedy occupants, to Paul. Overwhelmed with grief, Paul walks the streets and finds himself looking at an apartment for rent. He finds Jeanne, (Maria Schneider), a girl-woman, barely out of her teens, looking at the same apartment. She is to be married in a few weeks to her bourgeois, filmmaker fiancee. Paul and Jeanne circle each other warily in the empty flat, each contemplating the rental, (and each other), and wondering who will take it. Suddenly, they grab each other and have hard, fast sex against the apartment wall. Thus begins a most bizarre relationship.
Paul makes the rules. Jeanne must follow them or she will not see him again. Their purely carnal relationship must remain anonymous, emotionless, and exist only within the walls of the apartment, which Paul rents for this purpose. There are to be no sexual taboos between them. He does not want to know her name or anything about her and refuses to give her any information about himself. They are not to see each other outside the apartment confines, nor even leave together. It seems as if Paul wants to bury his pain, his sense of betrayal and hurt in the mindless, sometimes brutal, act of sex. Director Bernardo Bertolucci's camera perfectly captures the impersonal nature of their coupling. The shots are blunt, without sensuality or eroticism, but an enormous sexual energy is captured. I think Jeanne is fascinated by the mystery that is Paul. She is bored, perhaps, and looking for something, maybe excitement. She is certainly intrigued by Paul's dominant role, and seems to enjoy playing the passive partner most of the time. She is clearly not happy with her boyfriend, who relates to her as the object of his latest film. He talks at her, not to her. And he does not listen. However, I do not see Jeanne as merely an object here, as do some others. The film focuses on Paul, not Jeanne.
It is unfortunate that Ms. Schneider's career fizzled after this movie. She is excellent as Jeanne and perfectly captures her character's capriciousness, playfulness, bewilderment, vulnerability, anger, frustration, seductiveness and curiosity. Brando is simply superb. There are times, when he and Jeanne are together, that it appears as if he is extemporizing. He acts as if there is no camera filming him - as if he is not acting at all. There is one scene, where he is alone with his wife's body - she is layed-out in a coffin. Brando begins to speak to her and just loses it. His remarkable outpouring of guilt and grief is probably the best acting I have ever seen.
Towards the end of the film there is a surreal ballroom scene where couples are dancing the tango. It is both haunting and memorable. The end is a bit of a letdown, but in a Brandoesque moment the actor comes to the rescue.
Bertolucci was very effected by the work of painter Frances Bacon, considered to be one of the best artists of the 20th century. He chose Brando after seeing a Bacon painting "of a man in great despair who had the air of total disillusionment." The "Last Tango In Paris," defined as "the most controversial film of an era," brought Bertolucci to international attention. It was nominated for two Academy Awards. Vittorio Storaro's cinematography adds to the cold, remote ambiance. His camera pans the colorless apartment and makes the viewing experience as impersonal as the couple's relationship.
This is obviously not a film for everyone. It has been called obscene, and worse. However, there are many, like myself, who think it is a great film. For fans of Marlon Brando, it doesn't get better than this. Bravo!
JANA

The Big Easy has been long overdue for a dvd run. The series is a deliciously written storyline woven through the streats of New Orleans, with a hometown cop/detective and district attourney from the northeast at the center of it all. Definately worth it to watch, as the southern charm, good humor and occasional steamy encounters can keep one glued to their seats.

Laissez le Bon temp rouler... let the good times roll!Nothing is simple in The Big Easy, the setting for Season One of this sexy, action-packed crime series. Thatcher: The Final Days Review

Thatcher: The Final Days
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Originally broadcast on British TV, this affecting drama follows the last days Margaret Thatcher (Sylvia Syms) spent as Prime Minister of Britain and leader of the Conservative Party, and how members of her Cabinet attempted to depose her from her position.
Margaret Thatcher's leadership of the Conservative Party took Britain out of the turbulent 1970's and into a period of war, strikes, and increasingly polarized social division. Loved and hated in equal measures, by the early 1990's, the knives were out and she was ousted from power in one of the most dramatic episodes in British political history.
A bravura performance by Sylvia Syms as Margaret Thatcher, along with strong performances by the entire cast. Featuring Keith Drinkel as John Major, and an especially astute performance by John Wood as Heseltine.

The Big Easy: Season 2 (2008)
Average Reviews:

Saw the original movie which was pretty good and thought when USA Network brought it to tv on Sunday nights that it would be a hit. But it barely made it two seasons? Good cast with Tony Crane as Remy McSwain, young Lesile Bibb(season 2), and Barry Corbin and shot entirely in New Orleans!! Poor storylines(killer for most series)might have been it's down fall? Remember, USA Network was still young and trying new things(a lot of Canada produced but set in U.S. shows)to make a footprint. The show needed to be just as "gritty" as the city it was in to survive but it wasn't?? Glad to see some of these short-lived shows come to dvd just to see some of the actors (Lesile Bibb-"Talladega Nights", Robert Knepper-"T-Bag" in "Prison Break" for one) who would go on to bigger stuff. But if you like seeing New Orleans, you'll really love this show!

Sky West and Crooked ( Bats with Baby Faces ) ( Gypsy Girl ) Review

Sky West and Crooked ( Bats with Baby Faces ) ( Gypsy Girl )
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
17-year old Brydie suffered some brain damage in a childhood accident and now runs wild in her tiny West Country village, playing in the graveyard with small children and obsessing about death. The townsfolk look the other way, but when a young gypsy man starts following her, they fear for her safety.
Hayley Mills was 20 but looked 12 when she made this movie which was written by her mother and directed by her father. She's quite good as the innocent, damaged girl, even though she overdoes the hysterics a few times. Ian McShane, as the gypsy man who fancies Brydie, is good but looks a bit too old and menacing to be her love interest. The movie is very low-key and slow, wandering aimlessly for the first half and only developing some action at the very end.
"Gypsy Girl" was originally titled, "Sky West and Crooked," a phrase that refers to Brydie's mental state. It's a rare find for fans of Hayley Mills and an interesting, though decidedly low-budget-looking, film.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) Review

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I do not consider it hyperbole to talk about the second season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" as scaling operatic heights, culminating with the glorious aria of "Becoming, Part 2," which I still relentlesly tout as one of the ten best dramatic hours on television I have ever seen in my life. I have watched a lot of television and have been teaching classes about this topic for over half my life, so I believe I can make a pretty convincing case. We witnesses the potential of this series in Season 1, when creator Joss Whedon held off on the revelation that the mysterious Angel was really a vampire, who just happened to have a soul and loved the Slayer, until half way through the abbreviated first season. In Season 2, we find out just how far true love can go wrong.
Love continues to be a very painful thing for the Scooby Gang, as Cordelia ("Some Assembly Required"), Xander ("Inca Mummy Girl") and Joyce ("Ted"), find out. Then again, prospects look much better for Willow ("Phases"), although we never really do take the Cordelia-Xander romance ("Go Fish") to be anything more than a cosmic joke, which does offer up the delightfully twisted "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" as the exception that proves the rule (footnote: Buffy spends most of the episode as the Buffy rat because Sarah Michelle Gellar was hosting SNL that week). Of the off-arc stories, "Halloween" and "Ted" are clearly the best of the bunch. But when it comes to romance, Buffy and Angel are truly on the road to hell paved with the best of intentions.
It is clear in the season premier episode, "When She Was Bad," that things are different. When Buffy dances seductively with Xander, taunting him with her sexuality, the ante has been upped considerably. The pivotal point in the season comes with episode 13 (of 22), "Surprise," when Buffy unknowingly undoes Angel's curse on the night of her 17th birthday by making love to him. Why the gypsies put in the Faustian (in the Goethe sense) escape clause via the moment of true happiness and contentment is debatable, but the galvanizing effect on the show is truly impressive. When Angelus brutally slays Jenny Calendar in "Passion," leaving her body in a grotesque display for Giles to discover in his bed (while opera music soars in the background), it is the symbolic Hellmouth of the show opening up. The audience is shocked into realizing how bad things can get, only the worst is yet to come. Giles's anger buys him one shot at Angelus, but Buffy has to rescue him. They turn on each other in anger, and Buffy actually slugs him to the ground before they collapse weeping in each other's arms. Buffy tells him, "I can't do this alone," but this proves to be most ironically incorrect.
Clearly Whedon constructs each season around two half-season story arcs. The first half of Season 2 heralds the arrival of Spike and Dru, and the quick departure of "The Annoying One." Of course now we look back and are amazed at what James Marsters has done with the role of Spike, but at this point it is Juliet Landau's ditzy psychotic vampire who provides the flair of the dark side. Whedon brings the first half to a climax in "What's My Line?," the show's first two-parter, where we are introduced to Kendra the Vampire Slayer. It seems Buffy's brief moment of death at the hands of the Master in "Prophecy Girl" has some long reaching implications we only begin to appreciate at this point. But with the return of Angelus everything changes. Spike and Drusilla are trying to reassemble the Judge, a grotesque who cannot be killed "by any weapon forged." Then everybody learns the truth about not only Angel's transformation but also Jenny's betrayal. Thus begins the deadly game of cat and mouse between Angel and his former allies, which culminates in the two parts of "Becoming."
Both parts of "Becoming" are written and directed by Whedon, and represent the apex of his work on the series. When Angeleus opens the portal to Hell, only his blood can close it, but things are not going to be that easy for Buffy. The dramatic culmination contains the best fight sequence (with swords) in a show that prides itself on innovative staging of its fights, and is an ultimately emotionally shattering experience captured beautifully by Sarah Michelle Gellar's slow dissolve into tears while the haunting Sarah McLachlan song "Full of Grace" is played. Joss Whedon had set this moment up from the first episode of the series. It is a payoff usually reserved for the final episode of a series and not simply the end of the second season. "Becoming" is truly an astounding accomplishment in the history of dramatic television and when you watch the entire second season again you can appreciate how brilliantly this shattering conclusion is set up.
The original theatrical film was a teaser, the first season on television was an appetizer, but the second season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was epic and once you see this, whether again or for the first time, you are not going to want to stop here. It was also nice to see that the extras went up a couple of notches for the Season 2 DVD collection, especially since we expect more goodies from Whedon and crew, especially given the high quality of "The Watchers Guide," the show's official companion volumes. There was a lot of thought put into this show, which means any and all insights and looks behind the curtain are greatly appreciated.

Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek (2005) Review

Kakurenbo - Hide and Seek (2005)

Kakurenbo, like Makoto Shinkai's Voices of a Distant Star, was created by only a few people yet stands a cut above a lot of anime of the same type. It presents unique ideas that would never have been tried by any of the more mass marketed anime. While the emphasis of Kakurenbo is the horror story, it still has plenty to offer outside of that, like stunning visuals, plenty of atmosphere, and a haunting soundtrack that plays well as the story unravels.
Kakurenbo is about eight children who dare each other into playing a game of hide and seek (Kakurenbo) in a city that's become a kind of urban myth among the children. Following specific rules, including following road signs, wearing fox masks, and going in with seven children, will trigger the city into life, or so the myth goes. The children follow these rules down to one, and that is they actually go in with eight. But the city comes to life anyways, and their game turns into a struggle, and all the while one boy attempts to find his lost sister who played the game before him.
The creatures that come to life in this short anime are drawn from Japanese mythology, and are made to fit into a more modern world, giving them a unique appearance that's successfully terrifying. When placed in the dark setting, these monstrosities do their job. And with relish. By the end, once all the monsters, or demons, are revealed, and twists play themselves out, you should be left with a disturbed feeling of horror in you stomach, especially when you realize what lights the city....
This is one of those films that just don't compare that easily with others. It's too different. Yet it's still great and worth the money. The DVD contains more special features than most anime DVDs have, and this makes up for the shortness of the film. Plus, had the film been longer, the effect would have been lost, I think. I'd recommend this to hardcore anime fans who don't mind a little difference from anime to anime.
