I won't put a product description here as I already did on the A&E copy and on another set at the UK store. I will say this, however. The good news, this is a complete set unlike the A&E one being half the series. The bad side, 1) It is region 2 issue, if you want to play it here, you need a region free player. 2) The price that the marketplace sellers here are asking (at present) is too dang high, England's marketplace sellers want much less for it. 3) There is also a newer release set available from Amazon's UK Store with a 9th disc which includes a 40th anniversary reunion interview with the cast and crew, and the feature length "Legend of the Champions" that was recreated in 1983 out of the 2 episodes "The Beginning" and "The Interrogator". 4) This newer set (recently reissued again in 2010, no change from the 2007 release except in cover art) frequently sells for less than what American Marketplace Sellers want for this older set (I have noticed my recently merged with some reviews on the 2010 re-release being sold here). Buy that one (and a region free player) and enjoy a great show.

Silk Stalkings - The Complete First Season (1991) Review

Silk Stalkings - The Complete First Season (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Silk Stalkings was yet another show from the fertive mind and studio of Stephen J. Cannell, and was one of (if not the) longest running of his hour long shows. Silk Stalkings originally debuted on CBS as part of the late Friday night Crime Time After Primetime slot but that was soon cancelled and it became a cable only show airing on USA Network as they had entered into a co-production deal with CBS originally.

The show lasted eight years in all and, as so many shows do, ended on a never resolved cliffhanger. But that's a long way into the future and with the ex-husband and wife team of Tom and Cassie. This first season is pure gold as we are introduced to Rita Lee Lance and Chris Lorenzo of the Palm Beach Police Department's Homicide division.

In the first few episodes Rita is a much harder character than she is for most of the rest of her run. It seems that she has an inoperable brain tumour that makes her take risks no normal cop would take. This little character trait is swiftly forgotten and never ever mentioned again. Chris and Rita have the usual male/female cop partner dynamic for the first couple of years and are Best friends in every sense of the word with no hint of sexual tension or any underlying romance. Initially they had the usual one night stands but this would later be replaced by long term relationships later on.

Calling one another Sam most of the time (and not a reference to Sam Spade but rather Slammin' Sammy Sneed, who they both considered the greatest ever golf player. The first few episodes also used golfing references in voice overs by Rita but that was also dropped although the "Sam" nickname remained throughout their time in the show.

As all good things must, eventually both Rob Estes (Chris) and Mitzi Kapture wanted to move on to pastures new and so halfway through the fourth season and after finally giving into viewers obvious wish, they became romantically involved and married. Almost instantlly Chris is killed and Rita, pregnant with Chris child, leaves Palm Beach for good. In the run up to this two new characters are slowly introduced as replacements, Michael and Holly, and dubbed "The Tupperware Twins" by fans of the show that know there is no replacing Chris and Rita, fill out the rest of season five before being totally forgotten and never mentioned again when Tom and Cassie take over at the start of season six for the shows final three seasons.

Tom and Cassie are fine replacements but there really is only one Top Detective duo in Palm Beach and that is Chris Lorenzo and Rita Lance. A magic combination that make every episode shine. They truly were an amazing pair on screen and although Mitzi Kapture was originally going to stay with the show after Rob Estes departure, only did the characters justice as it really seems like a logical end to the saga of these two wonderful characters. Estes was sick of filming in San Diego when wife, Josie Bissett, was filming Melrose Place up in LA and then Kapture became pregnant. The storyline in season four built to the marriage of Chris and Rita and then Chris's untimely death and as heart wrenching and horrible as it always seems, no matter how many times you watch it, if Rita had stayed it would have almost driven home the fact that only one actor wanted to quit instead of this end of the road for these two great characters.

But this DVD boxed set is all about Season One and the introduction of two of Cannell's greatest characters and their crime solving amongst the wealthy and famous of Palm Beach. Taking their first teetering steps and jettisoning the elements that didn't work, this show is soon hitting a stride that doesn't let up over the four and a half years we are lucky to meet up with Chris and Rita.

I was hopeful of DVD boxed sets of other Cannell shows after Wiseguy debuted, but to say that I was both thrilled and delighted that Silk Stalkings would be the first of Cannell's shows to recieve the season by season boxed set treatment would be a major understatement. My two personal favorite Cannell shows are both this and 21 Jump Street (next for release) and to see both of them starting the long list of Cannell box sets (with Greatest American Hero promised for next year as another treat, and can I please put in my vote for the short lived but amazing show Profit) was a dream come true. I'd heard rumours of Jump Street and that seemed only natural with Johnny Depp's selling power (not to mention that Jump Street was a superb Cannell show with another cast of great characters) but Silk Stalkings as the first boxed set? I can only thank the powers that be at Anchor Bay Entertainment, for making this Cannell Fans dream come true. I am literally counting the days until the release of this DVD boxed set and although we've had a slew of excellent releases this year (both old and new)THIS is the boxed set of the year for me.

There seems to be no news on special features but I'm hopeful for at least one or two audio commentaries and some cast/crew interviews, particuarly Estes and Kapture.

This review probably sounds like a paid advertisement for this DVD but if you enjoy Cannell's mix of action, humour and great characters you owe it to yourself to pick up this first boxed set. I am paitently waiting for the day that I have all four and a half years worth of Chris and Rita episodes on DVD to enjoy forever as this is one of THE best shows out there (in my humble opion obviously) and will be one of the highlights of my DVD collection.

Thanks Anchor Bay. You've done right by me.

It's "The Annoying Thing" in a brand-new (yet kinda short) DVD !
This DVD has some of your favorites songs in awesome video form like "Axel F", "Popcorn", and "We Are the Champions". Also there are some never-before-seen Crazy Frog short clips like "Jingle Bells" and "Copa Banana". Not only that, there are some cool animatics and other behind-the-scenes stuff in there, too !
Bottom line, this is a good DVD if you like the Crazy Frog, but they might want to do better next time. Look for more of the Crazy Frog on Cartoon Network and Cartoon Network Video online.

Blue Submarine No. 6 (Special Edition) Review

Blue Submarine No. 6 (Special Edition)
Average Reviews:

This four volume series is exceptional--I like it as much as Macross Plus with the drama, the dialogue, and of course, the action and mechanical designs. Computer graphics and cell animation merge seamlessly. The characters are deep and diverse. The setting is similar to Voogies Angel and Agent Aika (or Waterworld) , while the theme of a scientist creating human-animal hybrids or mutants reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Even though each DVD is only about 30 minutes long (this last volume is longer), as long as I don't pay more than twenty dollars this collection is worth it. Cartoon Network is going to show this series Nov 6, but for best picture quality this is best enjoyed on DVD. The dubbing was done by Coastal Carolina--my favorite sound studio. This series gives not only beautiful graphics and glorious explosions, but asks the nature of humankind's tendency for conflict and violence.

The African Burial Ground: An American Discovery (Home Use) Review

The African Burial Ground: An American Discovery (Home Use)
Average Reviews:

A solemn but great day to discover such deep history of my ancestors in my very own backyard. My 10 yr old daughter was with me and she was in awe and doing her own thing of writing her note and video taping but I was in my own moment and did not know what she did. She even voluntarily wanted her own book and picture to take back to school to share with her class.
I am glad the people fought for a burial ground to keep the memory of our people but I am also sad to know the many bodies that were dug up to build our great NYC. I pray my people will find rest for their soul. 3/6/11, a great day for me, visiting The African Burial ground with my 10 year old and my 18 year old foreign exchange student. Great DVD. Will treasure, a great keepsake, history on DVD and I will definitely purchase more as gifts for my friends and family. Love, love, love.

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006) Review

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love a good work of fiction but sometimes reality can be very entertaining. This series is well-made and so intense and passionate that it brought me to tears more than one time. Every episode is a unique road to the superbowl by the team who won it and told by 3 important actors of the team. The 1985 conquest of the Bears for example is told by Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon. The stories that leads to the big game are fascinating, touching and often surprising. I love the series so much that I was comtemplating buying the first DVDs on the market which focus on one particular team and all the superbowls they won. But now, I was happy to see that they compile everything in one package. The packaging is very well made, the 40 DVDs being separated in 4 eras (66-75)(76-85)(86-95)and (96-05), 10 discs by DVD. Also, an interesting 88 page book with every conquest by every team. On the DVDs you have also a bunch of interviews that we couldn't see on the NFL network. If you love the NFL this is a great work by NFL films and Steve Sabol and a great piece of history to possess. The only thing missing is the Colts Superbowl last year but the documentary is about the first 40 Superbowl so we can't have everything unfortunately.

Kidnapped Review

Kidnapped
Average Reviews:

This version of 'Kidnapped' is my favorite. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find. For a while only used copies of VHS tapes could be found on the internet and I was pleased to finally find it in the PAL format.
Since many other movies, or TV programs, like 'Alistair Cook's America' for example, are not available in the US, I found it convenient to purchase a DVD player which can play European PAL DVDs and has an output compatible with the American NTSC standard. Such DVD players are available on the internet for less than $100 and are a great investment, or, as a friend found out, his older, inexpensive DVD player made in Korea, was compatible with both systems.
Having such a player opens a window to the offerings on Amazon UK and other European companies.
With the American television sinking to the unbelievable low level of 'Dog the Bounty Hunter' and other reality TV programs, I find it refreshing to be able enjoy a variety of programs unavailable otherwise.

Like all of the other Blue's Clues videos- this one was wonderful! My son is 2 1/2 and just loves Blue and Steve. He can't get enough of the videos. This one was really good and very interactive. It prompts your child to yell out answers and help along in the story. The more they watch, the more they learn. I ordered 5 more of the Blue's Clues videos for my son for Christmas because he can't get enough!

Filthy Habits - Surfing DVD NEW & Sealed (1990) Review

Filthy Habits - Surfing DVD NEW and Sealed (1990)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I remember when Bilabong first released this classic surf flick. I was in high school and surfing was a dream to me and my friends. And, along comes this surf film that captured the 80s era, in the most raw stylish way; the birth of the nuevo-rippers and aggro-soul surfers carving there way one wave at a time around the worlds best breaks. Then there was the soundtrack to the film that nearly made me cry, no cheease and wine can match better than this...better than any football / classical music mash. The soundtrack to the film was outstanding, TSOL and Dream Syndicate doing Black...Occy, and Ronnie Burns, Garcia...wow, man...
Perhaps the best part of it was staying up late friday night, sneaking a beer and watching with friends...5 Stars if you aski me.

Traffic - The Miniseries (The Director's Cut) (2004) Review

Traffic - The Miniseries (The Director's Cut) (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original version was done by the Brits in 1990. Titled "Traffik" - it concerned the herion trade from Pakistan and its impact on life in Great Britain. It's a fascinating story with major characters in three distinct locations: Britian, Hamburg, and Pakistan. The characters of these three story-arcs interconnect and intertwine as the devastation of drug use and the futility of the drug war are laid bare.
If the story seems familiar, Steven Soderbergh retold it in his feature film "Traffic" in 1991. While shifting the locale to America, changing the drug to crack/cocaine and moving the source to Mexico, Soderbergh's version retains the essential elements of the British original:
A high ranking gov't official charged with fighting illegal drugs, his struggle as the problem hits close to home, the upscale wife of an arrested major drug dealer who steps into the drug trade to maintain her family's lifestyle, the local cops doing their best in the drug war, and the locals of the third world country - the source of the drugs - caught up in the dangerous business in their efforts to merely survive.
Now, 13 years later, USA network has updated the story yet again for the post-9/11 world. And a magnificent job they have done. While Soderbergh was content to do a straight remake, this newest version resets and recasts the characters and locations while only retaining the basic bullet-points of the plot. As dark, moody, and despairing as the original, the newest "Traffic" hits the mark.
I watched it as it ran on USA some months back and decided it would be a "must-buy" when it came out on DVD. To see that we will be getting a "director's cut" - well, that's just icing on an already delicious cake.
If your tastes run toward the gritty crime genre - Homicide:LotS / The Wire / French Connection / Prime Suspect - and you don't mind a little pessimism in your entertainment - you definitely want this latest telling of a story of our time.

My daughter loves this show, so we bought this DVD when the show disappeared from our stations. The DVD is great for kids who love the show, but I'm disappointed they couldn't offer more episodes on it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that more DVDs become available in the US before we tire of watching these same limited episodes over and over!

I first saw this documentary at the Noor Film Festival in Los Angeles. As someone with a passion for Persian music, I was particularly excited for the film and am glad to say that it did not disappoint. The film does an excellent job of showcasing the works of Hayedeh, beginning with her first musical endeavors and following her life until her tragic untimely death. Most notable were the rare video clips used throughout the film, as well as a rather impressive number of interviews with members of the Iranian music industry who were fortunate enough to work with Hayedeh throughout her career. This film is a must have for any fan and I highly recommend it.

This is a great primer for all you beginning wine buffs out there. I think John Cleese does a great jod of keeping an intimidating subject lower key and very modest. Mr. Men Show - Mr. Tickle Presents: Tickle Time Around Town (2008) Review

Mr. Men Show - Mr. Tickle Presents: Tickle Time Around Town (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Roger Hargreaves' Mr. Men characters, created for Price, Sloan, and Stern, have been an international sensation for decades. PSS is best known for Mad-Libs and humorous greeting cards. Never have their Mr. Men characters been marketed solely for children until now. The Mr. Men Show, which ran on Cartoon Network in the U.S., is undoubtedly a hit with small kids, but it's also one of the few kids' shows grown-ups will want to watch with them. It's also a hit on UK, French, and Australian TV.
Mr. Tickle is one of two DVDs from Season One, the other being Little Miss Sunshine Mr. Men Show - Little Miss Sunshine Presents: Fun in the Sun! The extras on each DVD center around these upbeat title characters, but the shows included don't. That's because each of the shows is about the various inhabitants of DillyDale, and how they all get involved differently, in the town. The six episodes on "Mr. Tickle" are: Parade, Sightseeing, Movies, Mall, Farm, and Dillydale Day. The episodes on Little Miss Sunshine are: Fair, Wildlife, Amusement Park, Beach, Lake, and Science.
The cover shows some 31 characters, but they're not all in each episode. Part of the fun is seeing how they live up to their names: Mr. Grumpy, Miss Scary, Mr. Rude, Miss Daredevil, etc. Each DVD includes a 16 page, full-color, 4 X 5 inch book, published by Penguin, Bonus features include "How to Draw Mr. Tickle" (or "Little Miss Sunshine" on the other DVD); a find Mr. Tickle game; "Dance, Dance, Dance" a montage of the music videos which segue throughout the episodes, DVD ROM parts which work when inserted into a computer, and previews for unrelated Sony shows on DVD. A website is listed, Mr[...], with this disclaimer: "The publisher does not have any control over and does not assume any responsibility for third-party websites and their content." A reminder not to let kids surf the Internet unsupervised.
This reviewer prefers cartoons to be released by the season, rather than volumes with just a few shows. But there's no denying the half dozen episodes on these discs, along with the enclosed storybook, in bright packaging, and at a reasonable price, will appeal to kids-- of all ages.
