This is one of the best TV mini-series I've ever seen. I was disappointed when it was over so I immediately re-watched it. Clive Wood and Joanne Whaley are perfect in the roles. Very, very engaging. Love and life from a man's point of view in the changing times of 1960's England. Loved it. Much, much better than the motion picture version of the book (same title).

NFL Americas Game: Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX Review

NFL Americas Game: Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX

Not much of a football fan myself (although I'll watch a good rivalry), but darn if I didn't catch myself watching the top 20 Countdown of the America's Game series a couple years back (the back stories and personality profiles are great).
NFL Network counted down the top 20 Super Bowl teams, and the 1985 Chicago Bears was rated #2. Out of the 20 I watched, I'd rank this DVD as #1 in the series (I'd also rank the 85 Bears first). NFL Films does great work, and this DVD shows `em at their best-great music, great video, and the shot (and music) of Walter Payton sitting on the bench by himself with his head in his hands at his last game will tug on your heartstrings!
I'd recommend watching this DVD first, then getting your hands on the Pure Payton DVD (DVD is available only in the book Payton).
Both are highly recommended, even if you aren't a football fan-my 75-year-old mom couldn't care less about football, and she loved it!
If you know someone who's a football and/or Bears fan, this would make a great Christmas gift.

Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America Review

Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America

Just recently checked out this documentary in Washington D.C. and I was impressed that Mya B touched on so many issues of sexuality from video images, religion, and black women's reclamation of sexuality. The video does not address the LBGT community, incest/rape, and health.
The interviews were very engaging and she captured black women's voices from across age, class and educational levels.
I would recommend this video for a young women's youth group because it will stir up discussion.

Hurricane Katrina - New Orleans - Before, During and After. August 27th - August 30th 2005.
Average Reviews:

I've watched this DVD and need to comment. If you want to see some amazing footage of downtown New Orleans as Katrina hit as well as the levees breaking, downtown filling with water, and then the attempted escape by the videographer during as the flood waters rise, then you need to watch this DVD. It's shot by a pro on pro equipment, so the video quality and editing are great, unlike some of the amatuer videos I've seen floating around. Also, because it's in downtown NOLA, you see the human element as those unable to leave had to deal with the storm as it happened. I saw some of this footage on a Nat Geo documentary on Katrina, but if you want to see it all, you need to see this DVD.

Gilmore Girls - The Complete First Five Seasons (2000) Review

Gilmore Girls - The Complete First Five Seasons (2000)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The quick, witty dialogue of Gilmore Girls is an homage to screwball comedy films like His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby. It works surprising well, largely because there are different levels of speed talking: Some characters can keep up, others get lost, and some try on certain days and prefer to be normal people on other days. References and allusions abound as well. Some of the cultural references are highly obscure - that is, even with your ability to pause and rewind the world of Gilmore Girls, there are times when even the viewer can't keep up. This is all part of the fun of a dialogue-driven comedy that serves its main characters far too much coffee and a hilarious amount of food.
When the plot turns serious and the dialogue slows down, the sparkling planned community shimmers away as the stuff of real life creates drama. I appreciate that the writers understand the need to feel drama slowly. You can't banter through it, because only happy people relish in clever games.
It's hard to explain how a show about mostly white, middle class people living in a crime-free fantasy has become so popular, especially on the WB, which has been one of the few channels to embrace all of America's cultures, races, classes, and so on. I think the answer is that the relationship between a single mother and her daughter and an absentee father is highly translatable to many Americans. There are many conversations detailing Lorelai's struggles to provide for her daughter. Viewers also empathize with the weird and uncomfortable encounters with rich, elitist people, namely, Lorelai's parents.
The DVDs are somewhat lacking in extras - a making-of video and some extended or extra scenes are all you get. I think fans of the show would enjoy a dialogue dictionary of all of the references the characters make, a list of the books Rory and Jess are always reading, a map of Stars Hollow, a coffee cup, and Sookie's recipes.

Gaudi's La Familia Sagrada (Spanish) DVD (2004) Review

Gaudi's La Familia Sagrada (Spanish) DVD (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The work of Gaudi is, arguably, the work of genius; and the concepts that buttress the towering and luminous physical structures harken the human soul back to its Infinite source, the body back to the primordiality of deep soil, rocky plains, and kleidoscopic clusters spiraling from lakes, streams, and oceans under the blazing circle of the sun; hence capturing Gaudi's life and work is highly pertinent for today, for an era--& I can only speak of N. America--of the box sophmorically covered up in default sheets of striated glass and cold pallid steel, not to mention the incessant pursuit of the body and its illusive pleasures within a world of simulacra, of hyper-reality; a world without memory, without reference.
The DVD of Gaudi's La Familia Sagrada--a project, we learn, that is still in construction--is, at best, 'charming', and rustic. If you're expecting a sleek work of production, you won't find it here. The picture quality isn't the best, nor is the sound quality; moreover, I found myself a little disatisfied by the brevity of this work, like a feast that ends once the final crabcake has been tossed from tray to outstretched tongue.
In spite of this, there is also a sense in which the production seems quite fitting to exhibit this building that stretches beyond time--that began in the late 19th Century, and continues today with at least one century more of construction before completion. Perhaps its lack of pomp or sexiness is a more authentic portrayal of Gaudi's cathedral whose design was inspired by a growing asceticism and pursuit of the sacred, rather than that of the tawdry and glamourous.

Understanding Mental Illness DVD Review

Understanding Mental Illness DVD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This recently-produced video titled "Understanding Mental Illness" contains information and classifications of mental illness that pre-date the DSM-III. One of the most glaring examples is its description/classification of schizophrenia as a "Personality Disorder." What's worse, really bad actors bulge their eyes and display stereotypical (and often violent or menacing) behaviors during poorly-produced vignettes. For example, a woman trembles with "fear" as a rubber spider is pulled across a blanket as she lies in bed. I've seen more realistic scenes (and better actors) in 1950s era 3-D movies! This video/DVD is far worse than any of the old 16mm health education films that I suffered through as a high school student. I would have rated this video/DVD as a "Zero-Star" if it was an available option.

History -- Modern Marvels Oil Fire Fighting Review

History -- Modern Marvels Oil Fire Fighting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound of an oil rig fire is louder than a jet engine. Putting it out requires first dragging away rig pieces, etc. in the area to avoid causing re-ignition, and using reflective tin shields to protect workers and equipment from the blazing heat.
The earliest way of putting out oil well fires was with water - difficult at best. It was then accidentally discovered that one could "blow" them out via explosives set off at the base of the fire to temporarily deprive it of oxygen. Long-reaching rigs were used to position the explosives, as well as drag away nearby debris in preparation. WWII veterans then enhanced the procedure through "shaped" explosions.
Some experts contend that putting the fire out is the easy part - one then has to cap the well. This may require cutting off jagged vertical pipe ends. Initially it was done with sand-coated wire moved back and forth at the cutting location by two winches; now it is accomplished with a hydraulic jet cutter (water with sand) - taking only 30 minutes instead of the former 30 hours. "Christmas tree" caps were developed in the 1950s.
The 750-some oil platform fires in Kuwait started by the Iraq army were put out in 6 months.
"Oil Fire Fighting" also covered the career of Red Adair (world's most famous oil fire-fighter) and a brief summary of putting out oil tank fires.

You might as well have someone pick up a history of costume book, read it out loud and show you the pictures.
This DVD is too expensive. It shows still pictures found in all costume books, and gives you a very superficial account on the history of fashion.
I do not recommend it to anyone.
The quality is terrible and even though information states that it has been released in 2004, it stops at th late eighties or early 90's

A Queen Is Crowned Review

A Queen Is Crowned
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`A Queen Is Crowned' is the colour documentary of the Queen's coronation as shown in cinemas at the time of the event. It starts with footage from around the UK and Sir Lawrence Olivier narrating about the splendour of our `sceptred isle' before moving on to the actual coronation itself. You follow the Queen as she travels to Westminster Abbey in the magnificent golden coach, see the various rituals and oaths of the ceremony (all explained by the narrator), see the various dignitaries honour the Queen and parade out of the abbey and see the huge armed forces as they parade en masse through the streets of London. Finally you end with the Queen waving to the massed crowds as they swarm the mall and Buckingham Palace to honour their new Queen. The costumes, ornaments of state and setting are truly awe inspiring and the pomp and ceremony are fascinating to watch. The score from The London Symphony Orchestra is uplifting and completely in keeping with the ambiance of the day. It is interesting to see the Coronation in colour and with explanations after seeing brief exerts over the years at various royal mile stones. If you have even a passing interest in this event I'd recommend this DVD, it makes for interesting viewing and places the reign of our Queen in that bit deeper context.

First off, this is a very nicely produced and packaged set. It's great to have most of the episodes (this is NOT the complete series) in one set. Most of the bonus features from Hart Sharp Video's 4 sets is carried over, but as I went through the set, some segments are missing. Also, the audio commentaries (on the Berra, Torre, Posada and Rivera eps) are not included. Right now, the set is $40 as opposed to the retail price of $100. For me, $40 for the ten previously unreleased episodes made this a worthwile purchase.

Parliamentary Procedure Made Easy DVD Review

Parliamentary Procedure Made Easy DVD
Average Reviews:

This video was very basic. It defined the terms used in Parliamentary Procedure (Par Pro); like quorum, main motion, and gave the procedure for voting. It also gave the order of business for a regular meeting. A nice touch was after each section it quizzed the viewers on the main points. However, I had hoped the video would show examples of people using Par Pro and it did not. This video was basically a narrated Power Point presentation. It did not show Parliamentary Procedure in action. It was not worth the money!

Baby Looney Tunes, Vol. 3 - Puddly Olympics Review

Baby Looney Tunes, Vol. 3 - Puddly Olympics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few weeks ago, I gambled on renting "Baby Looney Tunes: Puddle Olympics," at a local video store in hopes that my little boy would find something besides "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," that would draw his attention for a little while. As it turned out, I was so pleasantly surprised that I bought this product less than a week later.
On this DVD, the cast members at Granny's Daycare are: Granny (voiced by June Foray herself) and the toddler versions of Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, Tweety, Tazz, and Lola Bunny. Occasionally, they are joined by pint-sized Melissa (Daffy's love interest from 'The Scarlet Pumpernickel') and Petunia Pig. There are eight episodes with four 60-second sing-a-long music videos for a running time of almost 90 minutes.
Four of the episodes are: 1. 'Time & Time Again,' as Daffy learns the value of knowing how to tell time; 2. 'May the Best Taz Win,' as the gang learns why playing is more important than winning; 3. 'Sylvester the Pester' has our favorite feline craving Granny's attention without let-up until Tazz does the same thing to him; and 4. 'Mine!' (our least favorite) has Daffy finding Granny's lost wallet and refusing to give it back.
The next four are: 5. 'Cat-Taz Trophy,' as Sylvester and Tazz learn to share when competing in a toy car derby; 6. 'Duck! Monster! Duck' has Daffy finding out what it is like to be scared; 7. 'Brave Little Tweety' has timid little Tweety finding his own courage; and the title episode is the best, 8. 'Puddle Olympics' shows the tykes turning their imagination into a competitive game to cross a puddle (it looks like a lake to them) to reach the playground on the other side.
Now, frankly, I confess that I wouldn't have been caught dead watching a show like this before I was a parent, but now that I am, I have learned a new perspective. Accordingly, I want to address a few common points made by other reviewers about this program's available DVDs: one, that this show is a travesty on the classic Looney Tunes characters; and two, that the characters' inconsistent behavior tends to veer back and forth between infants and four or five-year olds. I am certainly inclined to agree with those observations, but I think it misses the most vital point: we, as adults, are not this show's intended audience; little kids are.
As a comparison, yes, "Baby Looney Tunes" is in the same genre as "A Pup Named Scooby Doo," and "Little Flintstones," where the original audience (who are now adults) will likely find these new versions vastly inferior to their classic predecessors. However, these new 'kiddy-ified' programs were produced as a way of reinventing classic cartoon characters for a different and much younger generation. Further, "Baby Looney Tunes" has a distinct advantage over similiar kiddy makeovers, where this show actually blending cute, gentle humor with a simple, little life lesson into the story giving the program at least some educational value.
Much like current morning fare on the Disney Channel, such as "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse," I believe "Puddle Olympics" strives to make the featured stories important by making basic concepts, like telling time or sharing toys, attractive to infants and toddlers. It surely isn't always easy to balance fun with learning, but give this program credit for at least trying. Is "Baby Looney Tunes" in the same league as the current bigger-budget Disney Channel programs? Maybe, maybe not, but it does offer its intended audience (not to mention, parents) more than just a mindless diversion.
With that in mind, speaking as a parent, I would highly recommend "Puddle Olympics," as a low-cost, albeit valuable investment for your little ones, particularly as an alternative to your child's favorite show that you just need a break from. Like me, you may be surprised that this charming DVD is much better than you would have reasonably expected.
