(More customer reviews)I am actually livid about this. First it's a sub-par transfer of an hour of VHS material so forget any DVD niceties. Judging by the awful color and wretched sound it comes from the early 80s, and the style is that of industrial safety videos from much, much earlier. I teach publication design to non-designers, and I was suckered by the title, hoping for a low-stress introduction to basic principles (line, color, etc.) as used by fine artists. Hah! This is perhaps the most slow-paced, tedious, pedantic presentation you could imagine. The writing and delivery drain all interest from the subject matter. The paintings are predictable and not very interesting. Most are obscure, and I can figure out no rationale for the selection other than the producers' convenience. There is no discussion of historical or biographical context. The analysis is purely structural, so it offers no insight into the process of creation. If you want a DVD that will make your viewers hate art, this is it. Proof that Amazon will market anything in a box, regardless of quality.
