History - Modern Marvels : James Bond Gadgets Review

History - Modern Marvels : James Bond Gadgets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Forty years of Bond movies established the genre as the standard for gadgets. This DVD confirms that these gadgets were based on reality and actually still work.
The first displayed is an acrobatic homemade small jet plane (12' long, 17' wingspan, 12" engine diameter) that goes 325 mph and up to 35,000 feet.
Then on to an underwater tow sled with CO2-operated harpoon guns used in "Thunderball." The 20-minute fight scene took 3 months to film. The sled no longer has its electric motor, so in this DVD was towed by thin line monofilament.
"The Man With the Golden Gun" featured a 360-degree barrel turn over water using an AMC stunt car. This feat was recreated in the DVD; precision is required - speed must be between 39.5 and 40.5 mph, and placement within 2 inches. Viewers also learn that the movie's chase scenes were done in real Bangkok traffic with a movie official following to pay off damages to damaged vehicles.
The DVD ends at the International Spy Museum in D.C. - primarily a display for real spy weapons, tools and disguises, but also featuring additional Bond regalia.

$80 for a 25 minute DVD! I wanted to get driver's ed info for my 16 year old son and this DVD was a waste of money for us! It covers signs, lines on the road, very basic stuff. The web site only provides a very basic question test. A great dissappointment. Maybe the DVD could be used as the first video in a driver's ed high school class.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Volume 1 - Bad Girls/Consequences (1997) Review

Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Volume 1 - Bad Girls/Consequences (1997)
Average Reviews:

Faith was always an edgy character from the moment she was introduced on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In "Bad Girls" she takes the first step over the edge and in "Consequences" she actually joins the forces of evil in Sunnydale by allying with the Mayor. However, the most memorable sequence on this entire tape is when Buffy and Faith are dancing together at the Bronze in "Bad Girls." That alone is worth purchasing this tape.

Buffy & Angel Chronicle Vol 2 (1997) Review

Buffy and Angel Chronicle Vol 2 (1997)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Passion is one of the best Buffy episodes I have seen. It starts with a voice over from Angelus which manages to capture both the passion of his feelings for Buffy, whether it be hatred from Angelus, or love from Angel, and the menace which builds throughout the episode to the shocking method Angelus uses to ensure he stays without a soul. In addition, the episode has an angle of vuyeuristim which adds to the menace of the whole episode. Angel has always had a tendancy to be laconic, with the result this episode gives a greater insight into the way he feels for Buffy and the way he thinks than anything we have seen or heard from him before.
The events in `Passion' and the emotional backlash they cause, make the story of the teacher and schoolboy lovers in `I Only Have Eyes for You' far more poignant than they would have been as a stand alone episode. The Buffy/Angel story mirrors the teacher/schoolboy love affair, and the role reversal with Buffy taking the role of the boy and Angel as the female teacher is an interesting twist. The whole episode is beautifully acted right through to the end when Buffy realises she can forgive and move on, and the revulsion Angelus feels over the emotions for Buffy the possession stirred within him.
These are two wonderful episodes, superbly written and beautifully acted.

History -- Pacific: The Lost Iwo Jima Review

History -- Pacific: The Lost Iwo Jima

I was disappointed to discover that the DVD shipped had nothing to do with Iwo Jima, although it was indeed inside the "Pacific: The Lost Iwo Jima" slipcase. Instead, the DVD was a History Channel documentary about famous villains in television and film. I first watched the DVD after the end of the Amazon return period, so unfortunately lost my money.
So, I advise you to view this video immediately upon receipt so you may return it to Amazon for a partial refund -- in case you also receive a mis-packaged DVD. Or perhaps it is best to avoid taking the risk of ordering it at all.

Building A Solar Home Review

Building A Solar Home
Average Reviews:

I was hoping for more from this product. I know the description says that it is 11 min. long but the title, to me, was a little deceptive. "Building a Solar Home" should have read "A really brief look at Solar Energy" You can get much more information from just reading a few articles on building a solar home. This was more like an infomercial with nothing to sell at the end. While the photography was nice it has no substance past a brief explanation of Solar Power and certainly does not justify the money spent for it. I returned this item. Don't waste your money.

Debate Made Easy DVD (2006)

I was surprised that this DVD was only 24 minutes long. Although it had a concise outline of elements of (1) a cross examination debate; and (2) a Lincoln-Douglas debate, I had expected to see an actual debate. Instead, it is a series of several posters with a few interspersed shots of students speaking a sentence or two at a podium.

New Techniques in Watercolor DVD (2004) Review

New Techniques in Watercolor DVD (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A ponderous presentation by an artist with a blinkered view of technique. The cameraman failed to zoom in on the painting as it progressed. The spectator had to peer from a distance. The artists back was clearer than his picture. The colour resolution was awful, everything looked grey, even the brightest red. To cap it all it didn't offer one new technique. This artist actually deliberately avoided some the opportunities that came his way. He didn't like bloom, yet didn't admit it was all a matter of taste. It should have been called how to paint, with a stiff arm and no brush, that was its only unique selling point.

A&E - The First 48 : To Die For / Highway Revenge (#66) Review

AandE - The First 48 : To Die For / Highway Revenge (#66)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's little mystery as to who is guilty in these two scenarios. Still, this was an interesting episode to watch.
Of one suspect, a police officer says, "She is mostly a prostitute." But she is nooooo siren. She looks like something the cat dragged in. This leads to a potential truth about prostitution. It's not always about glamour. Sometimes, any ol' john will get with any ol' woman selling. The victim is the 78 year-old man with whom she is living. Still, no one ever asks, "Why was this old man stupid enough to let a known criminal live in his house!?" Another suspect is related to a retired cop. That's sooo important for viewers to see: cops are often just one degree of separation away from people about to be punished by the system.
The cops stand out in this episode. There's a poison ivy subplot here that just kills time. I love Officer C. Morgan, but she does need to consider getting a false tooth to fill in that gap in her teeth. Please don't imitate ol' Republican Condie Rice! One officer says to an interviewee, "We didn't bring you here just to say 'I gotta doodoo!'" LOL! I didn't know that was a widely used term, well maybe just we African Americans employ it. By the way, there's a lot of cursing from the police here. Perhaps this is their way to show toughness in front of suspects. However, if they are supposed to be role models, you would think they'd clean up there potty mouths.

Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases Review

Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the very first DVD of Tom and Jerry cartoons. It has a total of 14 shorts, plus a clip from the movie ANCHOR'S AWAY featuring Jerry doing a dance with Gene Kelly. The 14 cartoons that they included are all excellent. A few Oscar winners are included. All 14 are from the early period when Tom and Jerry were directed by Hanna and Barbera. Most of these are cartoons that I have never seen before. There is quite a bit of violence in these cartoons, and that's good, because that's how cartoons are supposed to be! Several of the cartoons have blackface gags, so if you are offended by that kind of thing, then I am letting you know in advance. For example, there's a scene where Jerry's face is dipped in shoe polish, and afterwords he has a blackface.
Unfortunatley, one of the cartoons has been edited! This really ticks me off! In the original version of "The Little Orphan," a lit candle lands on Tom's tail. His whole body is burned and turns black. Then the black Tom gets pushed into a cabinet of dishes. But on this DVD, the entire part where Tom is black has been deleted. This really Ticks me off! It's bad enough that they edit the cartoons when they play them on TV, but to edit them on a DVD is beyond ridiculous. Actually, I knew that the DVD was edited even before I bought it, but I bought it anyway because I love these cartoons! But still I don't understand why they edited it. I own plenty of R-rated movies with content that some people might view as being "offensive," but none of those are edited. So I guess some people think that a cartoon is somehow more offensive than an R-rated movie.
Well, despite this one flaw, this is an excellent DVD. The other 13 cartoons are all complete and uncut. The picture and sound quality is absolutely amazing. There's this one cartoon where Jerry is on top of a skyscaper in New York City, and he's hanging over the edge and when they show the moving traffic down below I almost got dizzy looking at it. All those itty bitty cars show up so clear on my TV screen. They really did a good job with the picture and sound here. Also it's nice to be able to watch these cartoons without any of those stupid network TV logos on the screen.

Unnatural Pursuits (1991) Review

Unnatural Pursuits (1991)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First I was turned off by the title, which seemed to promise a film about some form of decadence. And when my friend and I started watching this movie I was quickly prejudiced by its apparent subject matter: a self-absorbed, hard-drinking playwrite. But the intelligence and sly, low-key humor, along with a tantalizing sense of the offbeat, grabbed and then held my attention. Simon Gray, Unnatural Pursuit's writer, slowly builds character, plot and momentum. I can't recall many others who could engage my interest in what would otherwise seem so unpromising a protagonist as lead character Hamish Part. Bates, a subtle actor with the good timing of a comedian, is perfect for the lead role. The film skewers Los Angeles, bad actors, impatient directors and Texas before (with relative affection)nailing New York, the only successful destination of the play that Part has been trying to perfect. Yes, you're likely to be interested in what happens to the play. But the film uses so many surreal, comic and surprising tricks (including something which usually would be a real turn-off but which here is frequently refreshingly funny: musical interludes)that one's attention is constantly engaged by what is happening in THE MOMENT, a rare trick indeed. Humor is subtle, then riotous, with disarmingly poignant moments. One is lured into a sort of alternate universe in which midgets, alcoholism and the need for love and for being heard comprise thematic elements which slowly weave themselves unforcefully 'round the viewer. We were sorry to see it end and are now engaged in seeking out other videos of Gray's scripts, including the infamous "Butley." After experiencing "Unnatural Pursuits," almost everything else seems just a little bit stupid and predictable.
